With the vast majority of write-in ballots counted, both Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski and Republican Joe Miller looked to Monday when election officials will begin counting thousands of absentee ballots as a key day in their U.S. Senate race.
After about 5,000 write-in ballots were counted Sunday, Murkowski kept up her success rate of winning about 89 percent of the write-in votes outright, plus an additional 8 percent of write-in votes that were challenged but still counted for the senator anyway.
However, officials still have to count about 40,000 absentee ballots this week, according to the Alaska Division of Elections Director Gail Fenumiai. That figure includes several thousand absentee ballots with write-in votes that have not been counted yet.

Another article - putting Politico to the lie about the 40,000 outstanding absentee ballots. Morons.

“This week, the elections division will also start counting absentee ballots, estimated to be between 8,600 to 8,800.”
By the way, go over there (to this ABC story) and make a comment - they record them easily. YOu’ll see mine there.

“But up to 600 overseas ballots have until Wednesday to be returned”
Up to 600 overseas ballots. I also agre that courts are going to have a hard time with their liberal conception of themselves (even though the law is clear), throwing out Murcowsky vs. Murcowski.
It's a tough road for Joe - but he's fighting valiantly.
“because Lisa will get about 98% of it.”
You are assuming that Joe will fail in court. Given just the uncontested votes, this race is just about a dead heat.
“What this really means is that the law is not being followed in the way they are counted. ..”
True, and Murkowski knew the law which is why she had so many commercials spelling her name.
Actually, she is averaging 89+percent...
You may have noted that in post 71 in 1998 Robyn Taylor ran as a write-in and the state used intent as the standard. He was given many misspelling. I believe that will be the standard again. When I think about the end game and the US Supreme Court they have always used intent as the standard. I know Miller is saying otherwise but history just does not agree. Further if the judge lets AFN in then it will be much more difficult for Joe. As I see history and the math it looks like this is in the bag for Lisa. I think if Miller told his supporters about the Taylor write-in he would receive less money from them.
Yes, it is a dead heat....
The latest count Lisa 92,164 Joe 90,448
There are 10,000 more write-in ballots to be counted. tk
Thanks SeattleBruce!
my bad, not Taylor, should be Miller

How many more absentees? I keep hearing conflicting reports on the number of outstanding absentee ballots.
“How many more absentees? I keep hearing conflicting reports on the number of outstanding absentee ballots.”
That’s the $64,000 question. Supposedly 8700 were counted today. I think they’ve counted others before and I’m not convinced that there are many outstanding - despite the article I posted above that quotes the AK elections official Gail so and so. Very frustrating that we’re not getting better information - but what do we expect from the propagandists?
Propaganda?
After reading multiple articles about this, here is the best I can figure.
The “40,000” absentees were ballots already counted previously, now they just went through to pull all the write-ins and count those.
They counted a large number of absentees today in the 38th, 39th, and 40th districts. These all went heavily on election day for Murkowski, and went heavily for her in absentees. Instead of Joe picking up 1,000 votes today, it was actually Murkowski who picked up votes.
The outstanding military votes are between 600-1000. Even assuming 1,000 show up by the 17th, they’ll still split between Miller/Murkowski and a few McAdams. Joe would be lucky to pick up more than a couple hundred votes there.
It appears as though in uncontested votes, Murkowski is behind by about 5,000. There are about 10,000 write-ins left to be counted. If 90% go uncontested to her, she’ll end up ahead just in uncontested votes by about 3,000-4,000.
Very grim for Joe after today.
