Obama: ‘What About Compliments?' (ZERO)

Obama: ‘What About Compliments?’ Advance copy from the November 22, 2010, issue. William Kristol November 12, 2010 4:00 PM

At his November 12 press conference in Seoul, President Obama was asked the following question by CBS’s Chip Reid: “What was the number-one complaint, concern, or piece of advice that you got from foreign leaders about the U.S. economy and your stewardship of the economy?”

Whereupon the president began his response with a complaint: “What about compliments?” he asked. “You didn’t put that in the list.”

Well, soorrrrrry, Mr. President.

Poor President Obama. He’s (allegedly) getting all these compliments from his fellow world leaders—and the press just isn’t interested in having him tell us about them. True, President Obama became accustomed, as a candidate, to having a compliant press corps. But even so. After a contentious economic summit where the president was forced to defend the Fed’s ill-advised monetary policies, a summit that followed on the heels of the biggest midterm electoral defeat ever suffered by an elected first-term president, a defeat partly due to his ill-advised fiscal policies, did Obama really expect a reporter to stand up at the end of last week and ask, “Mr. President, what compliments did you receive from foreign leaders?”

That is, apparently, exactly what the president expected.

And that has us worried. We’ve assumed the president would learn from the voters’ repudiation of his party on November 2. We’ve assumed he would learn from reality’s refutation of his policies over the last two years. But the vanity that Jonathan V. Last elaborates on elsewhere in this issue seems to be standing in the way of such learning. President Obama has been mugged both by the voters and by reality—but he thinks that he’s still looking good, that he deserves plaudits, and

By choosing 0bama as their standard bearer, the Left has made a disastrous, almost fatal, miscalculation. He really is an empty suit and a blinkered ideologue.

For the Right, 0bama is the perfect example of the isolated ivory tower, Marxist elitist. He has done more damage to the Left than anybody, more even than Carter.

For us on the Right, keeping him visible, allowing him to continue to discredit himself, his ideology, and its adherents, is the best thing. He is our greatest asset!

OK, tin foil ON ...

If the power-brokers of the cynical Left can find the right “right-wing” lunatic... It will be a suicide mission, but if they look hard enough they can find someone unhinged enough to do it.

It would make 0bama a martyr and thoroughly besmirch the Right as a collection of dangerous assassins.

This would give the Left the best possible outcome. What better way to rid themselves of such a liability and simultaneously discredit completely their opposition.

The key is, will they be able to plan it carefully enough, and have they penetrated deeply enough into the federal investigative agencies, to get away with it.

As of now, that must not be the case, or they would have already done it.

... tin foil OFF

Contrast that with Obama. NOthing. No house, no village...no testimonials from friends or others.

Actually, many of those things exist....

.... in Kenya and Indonesia.

[and no, I'm not being sarcastic]

Good post. What btw was his answer to the question?

I see a lot people jumping ship here.

First off you have the democrats whom he basically threw under the bus.

You can say what you want about Angle and O’Connell but their candidacies forced Obama and company and the DNC to spend an inordinate amount of time and money fighting them keeping the heat off some of the other candidates running.

I think there’s going to be a backlash against him, probably led underground by the Clintons.

Then there’s this rumor mill about all the illegitimacy to come out about him. I hope not. I want this guy to stay in office....to spin...to self destruct all the way to 2012. I don’t want Hillary unless she does it in such a way to tick off the Obama backers....

You’re right, it will not get better and only get worse, esp if we get a Carter like hostage crisis which I think is going to happen.

He’ll have the same attitude...”plug the damn hole” in dealing with it.

His remarks to Jindal takes the cake. Bush went down there and put up with those two clowns, the mayor and the governor...They undercut him...

Obama undercut the people of Louisiana big time, and the press some how let him go scott free.

Well either someone lets out his history and birth records causing a big stink or there is a male or female honey pot in the picture somewhere that explodes thru the media forcing Dem leaders to make the “big walk” to the white house.

I highly doubt it would occur but in this charged enviroment I do slightly worry about a grassy knoll/ wearhouse window scenario. While it gets rid of one problem, the blame will be placed on disgruntled conservatives...a win win for the Dem’s. The Soviet leaders were knocking each other off all the time to maintain the status quo....soviet made cars were never safe...there were always...”unfortunate accidents”!

They’ll just settle for something more high tech and bureaucratic, perhaps a Rezko type financial bomb shell accusation of malfiscence leading to impeachment and resignation under threat of trial. Soros’ involvent in our politics I’ll wager is starting to wear thin and too many folks who have been funded by him have been exposed and are running for cover! Tie Soros and Obama together that could be construed as treasonous to this nation and everyone will be screaming for blood!

You’re right....

He was at 24% strongly approve yesterday, and 44% strongly disapprove....

I think the flood gates start this weekend. All it takes is for him to slide to 21% strongly approve, and 48% strongly disapprove...and you’re at -27. That would be a monumental milestone.

He continues to tick downward....His lows and highs getting lower each series....

I think the about face on across the board continuance of the Bush Tax Cuts yesterday wherein he restated what his principal advisor said leads me to the conclusion his plan is to take out his frustrations on the US voters.

Rather than any form of compromise, no matter how unlikely that was anyway except in the minds of the LSM, I look for him to dig in farther to the left, try to ram stuff through the lame duck session and then continue a bombardment of lefty salvos from the white house for the next two years.

Hopefully someone brings to the table the fact the cooks ate the strawberries and the guy is releaved of command.

Yours is a very good and insightful summary. How could our great country elect someone like this to be our president? A question for the ages...

I sincerely hope that, if anyone on the Left seriously tries it, he gets himself slapped with a conspiracy charge. In fact, I rather expect that is what would happen.

Despite what the Left thinks, most of us on the right really aren't stupid, and that includes those of us in the "bitter clinger" category. Since even before he was elected, any discussion of the possibility that someone might try such a thing (and there is usually deranged individual out there who will, at some point) always came down to: the last thing we need or want is a martyr.

As you have pointed out, he is doing a great job of discrediting himself and his ideology.

If any whisper of any plan to bring physical harm were to start floating around among right-wing circles, my expectation is that it would be reported, and quickly.

Oh, and pass me that tinfoil hat....it would not shock me to learn that the things you are talking about might have already been thought about, or even attempted. Hat off!

“You watch, the house of cards is about to fall...”

I pray this is so. It is also a tragedy that our first black president will leave such a legacy of total embarrassment.

If he had been all about the USA instead of all about Obama himself...but then if wishes were horses, beggars would ride(as the old saying goes).

Obama strikes me as a Class B remake of The Omen.

Everything he does appears to be antichristian, but I don’t think the Adversary is dumb enough to choose such an incompetent person to be his AntiChrist.

(I suspect even the devil hates Obama for being such a loser.)

His narcissism masks a deep insecurity about himself. ...

Bingo. Nice analysis.

Obama does not know what he is! His religious beliefs along with his loyalties are ambiguous. As the POTUS, that is downright frightening. He was selected by the Dem party because he is simultaneously presentable and pliable.

Some say that he is trying to destroy the USA. I am not convinced that that is his aim, although that is the end result at this rate. No, he simply does not know what he is doing. Woe-fully inexperienced. When confronted with crisis he simply falls back to ideology or bad advice. The healthcare bill was NOT his, although it bares his name, Obamcare (snicker). He just went along with the hard core leftists, who had this bill pre-packaged without him.

In the world of Machiavelli, he is a weak king. Those under him vie for petty powers through manipulating him. His enemies are beginning to run circles around him. God help him if he caves in to Republicans in Congress. And, Iran will get the bomb.

Very well said, as to pointing out the black hole that is Obama’s background. Did you notice during the campaign they couldn’t even find one individual who could get onstage and say Obama’s community organizing had improved his/her life?

It got to the point where I thought even some of the Obots might start to notice the total/eerie absence of people from O’s past who could testify that he had made a positive difference in their lives. It appears public education triumphed, and nobody thought critically about the situation long enough to notice the silence.

While everyone else was criticizing Obama and his policies, one person probably complimented the crease in O’s ‘pant’. That ended up being the only thing Obama heard during the entire summit.
