Obama: What About Compliments? Advance copy from the November 22, 2010, issue. William Kristol November 12, 2010 4:00 PM
At his November 12 press conference in Seoul, President Obama was asked the following question by CBSs Chip Reid: What was the number-one complaint, concern, or piece of advice that you got from foreign leaders about the U.S. economy and your stewardship of the economy?
Whereupon the president began his response with a complaint: What about compliments? he asked. You didnt put that in the list.
Well, soorrrrrry, Mr. President.
Poor President Obama. Hes (allegedly) getting all these compliments from his fellow world leadersand the press just isnt interested in having him tell us about them. True, President Obama became accustomed, as a candidate, to having a compliant press corps. But even so. After a contentious economic summit where the president was forced to defend the Feds ill-advised monetary policies, a summit that followed on the heels of the biggest midterm electoral defeat ever suffered by an elected first-term president, a defeat partly due to his ill-advised fiscal policies, did Obama really expect a reporter to stand up at the end of last week and ask, Mr. President, what compliments did you receive from foreign leaders?
That is, apparently, exactly what the president expected.
And that has us worried. Weve assumed the president would learn from the voters repudiation of his party on November 2. Weve assumed he would learn from realitys refutation of his policies over the last two years. But the vanity that Jonathan V. Last elaborates on elsewhere in this issue seems to be standing in the way of such learning. President Obama has been mugged both by the voters and by realitybut he thinks that hes still looking good, that he deserves plaudits, and

We don't hear him begging for compliments about what a great cruise he provided.
Prefident* Obama

Yeah, He's got the look of aan 18 year-old!
It's unreal. We have to put up with him and the classless queen for two more years.
ALL liberals have never grown-up intellectually and base their decisions on feelings rather than intellectual critical thought.
I agree with everything else you said, but he’s never been Hope and Change. He’s Hype and Chains, and a Communist.
The most transparent presidency is the most opaque.
I don’t think any of us realize the depth of deceit in this man and his background.
I worked in Dixon, IL a few years ago, filling in for a doctor there who was on vacation.
I stayed about two weeks, living in a local hotel, eating out each night.
I can tell you that the spirit and history of Ronald Reagan is everywhere.
“Ronald REagan’s House....Where he went to school....ROnald Reagan was a life guard here....Ronald REagan peed in the pool here..etc etc”
There was a large mural in the hotel I stayed at located in the pool, showing a young REagan as lifeguard....
Contrast that with Obama. NOthing. No house, no village...no testimonials from friends or others.
His Columbia and Harvard years are totally masked to the point that I believe fellow classmates at Columbia doubt that he ever attended.
Editor of Harvard Law Review?????? Nothing written?
Was he a Rhodes Scholar from Kenya?
It goes on and on...
Then to listen to him speak without the teleprompter...and the guy is lost...
When was the last time a president took a teleprompter to a grade school?
The teleprompter goes everywhere....
It all makes sense, all of it, when you realize how unqualified this guy is.
Every POTUS has a learning curve....but this guy?
You watch, the house of cards is about to fall...
What was his answer?
I got a compliment for Obama.
Barrack actually makes James Earl Carter appear Competent and makes Bill Clinton almost Reagan like.
Extend for a few years? What?!? How about "make permanent"?
Seems even the press “corpse” is out for Bummer blood now. They could have phrased the question a little more neutrally, such as asking what were the chief “comments” he got from foreign leaders. But they know he was royally panned and are starting to rub it in.
nobama: Bwaaahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
Affirmative action at it’s worse.
So, looking toward 2012, perhaps the press will now see him as a huge liability, and begin to take him down with ever increasing pressure, in order to have another nominee for the Dems by then. On the other hand, if they do that, they risk turning the public against all democrats, unless, of course, the democrats themselves push him out.
Exactly. There is no hope at all that it will ever get any better. This reminds me so much of the Berlin bunker days portrayed in the movie Downfall. To the very end, Hitler believed that all he had to do was issue an order and everything would be well. To the bitter end, there was never a time that Hitler asked advice from anyone else. Never did he say to anyone, "This is a fine mess we're in here. Do you have any ideas what to do?" He would just issue another order thinking that his words would fix it.
I saw this re-enacted with the BP oil spill where Obama famously ordered his people to "fix the damn hole". At no point did he have a clue how to go about doing it. He simply believed that issuing that order was all it would take, and he could pat himself on the back for his solution to the problem.
As a nation, we are in deep trouble in the next two years. Anyone with even the slightest bit of competence will abandon 'Unser Führer' in the coming weeks, leaving only those 'yes' people refusing to abandon the delusion of his greatness. There is no room for compromise in this man. There is no hope of him learning from his mistakes because he is unable to acknowledge that mistakes have been made.
Chip Reid: What was the number-one complaint, concern, or piece of advice that you got from foreign leaders about the U.S. economy and your stewardship of the economy?
Obama: What about compliments? You didnt put that in the list.
See? He couldn't even for a moment look at the possibility that he had made a mistake.
I have an alternative theory about what the Democrat powers-that-be might do about a liability like 0bama, but it’s kind of inflammatory for this forum...so I’ll just wait for someone else to mention it :)
“Zero is an appropriate nickname for Obama because he IS nothing. Hes hope and change and nothingness.”
////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
That is precisely why Obama will never adjust his view of reality, to do so would mean to face his nothingness. The truth is that we could have picked a name at random from a list of skilled tradesmen with no experience in government and almost certainly have picked a better president. Anyone who is in touch with reality would have been better, even if they were a high school dropout. Even many of those who voted against Obama and have thoroughly despised him all along have yet to realize just how deranged he really is.
He has always been clear to me, I see right through him.
“...did Obama really expect a reporter to stand up at the end of last week and ask, Mr. President, what compliments did you receive from foreign leaders?
Katy Couric would have.
He longs for the good old days.
