Speaker Nancy Pelosi will not give ground on her opposition to extending the Bush tax cuts on the wealthiest Americans, even as the White House and other Democrats have signaled that it might be time to compromise.
"It's too costly. It's $700 billion," Pelosi told NPR this morning. "One year would be around $70 billion. That's a lot of money to give a tax cut at the high end. And I remind you that those tax cuts have been in effect for a very long time, they did not create jobs."
Pelosi's strong stand mimics that of some of her colleagues on the Republican side of the aisle. House Minority Whip Eric Cantor told Fox News earlier this week that he was equally uninterested in compromising on the Bush cuts -- he wants them all extended, and that's that.
Nevertheless, President Obama and the White House are hoping they can hash out some kind of deal on the tax cuts when Congress reconvenes next week.
Some members of Congress signaled to to CNN recently that they might be more willing to compromise than their leaders are.

Possibly a compromise is raising the definition of “Rich”. It wouldn’t bother me a lot to raise taxes on the super-rich. They all clamor for it and vote Democrat anyway.
How does that praise go! Allah Akbar...........
Finally the Democrats are the Party Of No.
After flushing a trillion dollars in a failed stimulus down the drain, Pelosi now tells us we can’t afford tax cuts that would revive our economy.
This is really funny!
Pelosi you Idiot! All those people who have been laid off the last year or so had jobs to be laid off from! Those were the jobs that were created by the tax cuts, you dummy!
It’s not like letting tax cuts expire would create jobs.
This “too costly” business makes me want to puke. Hey Pelosi, you stupid f-ing bitch, IT’S NOT YOUR MONEY!!
Pelosi might want to start watching something other than MSNBC. Her party was B-slapped for the damage they are doing, and Ms. Pelosi was fired.
If she’s choosing ignoring reality perhaps there’s a mental defect? Minimally this must be time to mandate drug testing for House Speakers. Of course the test would probably just reveal high concentrations of botox and formaldehyde...
Pelosi is a fantastic example of how a person can create an assumption out of thin air, assume that the assumption is Valid Truth, and then never waver from the original premise...
Never thinking to read up on the actual data.
It would give me a good chuckle if it weren’t that she makes National Policy from her made-up assumptions.
“This too costly business makes me want to puke. Hey Pelosi, you stupid f-ing bitch, ITS NOT YOUR MONEY!!”
What’s even more infuriating is the fact that so many people have bought in to this mindset.
The other thing that’s infuriating is that people like pelosi think they are the bosses - that we work for them rather than the other way.
We need to make it real clear to our elected arrogant buffoons who the boss is!
Remember, these people REALLY DO live inside a bubble in DC, where reality doesn’t exist.

Nancys posh new office space is located behind the furnace room in the sub-sub basement of the newly renamed Karl Marx House Office Building. It features just over 200 square feet of plush ceramic tile with a large center floor drain for those days when the tears just wont stop. Fitted with tasteful porcelain and stainless steel wall accessories, her new office includes a single enclosed stall type workspace and one pink urinal with beige modesty panels for Ms. Pelosis personal use.
Pelosi is basically saying: I refuse to steal less money from the American citizenry because it will directly effect my personal friends and their associates.
And that’s a serious problem from my viewpoint.
Nancy, your office is that one way down there at the end, with the sign, Dept. of Irrelevance.
“I refuse to steal less money from the American citizenry”
Mine! MINE!! MINE!!!!!
I “love” Pelosi and the Demonrats! Tax cuts are costs to the government and tax increases are investments. They truly believe all money belongs to the government.
Here is a compromise. Any rich people who voted for Obama can pay more taxes.
Government is too costly and an additional $70 billion a year is too much to take from producers and out of a severely struggling economy.
