Military officials are still unclear as to what caused the "mystery missile" contrail spotted off the Southern California coast last night, but the most likely theory appears to be that an airplane was responsible.
Some experts believe the "mystery missile" is an optical illusion involving atmospherics and the contrails of a plane flying off in the distance.
Military officials have spent all day trying to determine who or what may have been responsible for what seemed like a mysterious missile launch caught on tape Monday night by a news helicopter off the Southern California coast.

Perhaps the US should institute some kind of system that would track planes near major cities like Los Angeles. You could use radar to see the planes coming and going. You could force planes to file "flight plans" so that you knew who was going to be where.
Why isn't something like this already in place?? I find it shocking that the military thinks that a jet was within 35 miles of Los Angeles but has absolutely no way to verify if this did or did not happen.

Some experts believe the "mystery missile" [sic] is an
optical illusion involving atmospherics and the contrails
of a plane flying off in the distance.
I guess if the military authorities work for a lying
metrosexual-in-chief, they feel they can lie at will to
the American people, and we will believe them.

See the article...FAA in replaying radar tapes show no aircraft in the area at that time....

We have satellites whose sole purpose is to watch for the sort of flash made by a missile launch. Whatever this is, I am certain someone in the military knows. Whether they will ever talk is another mystery.

That certainly wasn’t an airplane. I live near Vandenberg AFB where they send up missiles all the time and I know a missile contrail when I see one. That was a missile.

I bet those tapes disappear. That’s what happened with TWA 800.
To: ClearCase_guy
Saw your /s, but I actually heard today that radar had been looked at and it had not picked up anything. I suppose we’ll never know the real story.

It was a submarine-launched Russian Bulava missile sent to taunt Obama while he was out of the country.
Putin sent a Bulava missile Obama’s way when he was visiting Norway to pick up his Nobel Peace prize last year. And the Kenyan cut his Norway trip short back then too because of the Russian stunt.
Russia has no respect for the Kenyan and they are have a big laugh over this.

This is the emerging swamp gas spin. We even have a couple here who are pushing it relentlessly on another thread.
I posted elsewhere: "The residual colors are the result of a potassium permanganate oxidizer. I base this on both the video and eyewitness reports. The contrail waviness appears to be a result of gyro flight corrections and not wind shear".
That area is one busy airspace. My question to the swamp gas memes is where are the other contrails?
There is only one because of solid rocket fuel residue and not "unique" atmospheric conditions.
JMHO.
