(CBS) A mysterious missile launch off the southern California coast was caught by CBS affiliate KCBS's cameras Monday night, and officials are staying tight-lipped over the nature of the projectile.
CBS station KFMB put in calls to the Navy and Air Force Monday night about the striking launch off the coast of Los Angeles, which was easily visible from the coast, but the military has said nothing about the launch.
KFMB showed video of the apparent missile to former U.S. Ambassador to NATO Robert Ellsworth, who is also a former Deputy Secretary of Defense, to get his thoughts.

"It's spectacular
It takes people's breath away," said Ellsworth, calling the projectile, "a big missile".
Magnificent images were captured by the KCBS news helicopter in L.A. around sunset Monday evening. The location of the missile was about 35 miles out to sea, west of L.A. and north of Catalina Island.
A Navy spokesperson told KFMB it wasn't their missile. He said there was no Navy activity reported in the area Monday evening.
On Friday night, Vandenberg Air Force Base, in California, launched a Delta II rocket, carrying an Italian satellite into orbit, but a sergeant at the base told KFMB there had been no launches since then.
Ellsworth urged American to wait for definitive answers to come from the military.
When asked, however, what he thought it might be, the former ambassador said it could possibly have been a missile test timed as a demonstration of American military might as President Obama tours Asia.
"It could be a test-firing of an intercontinental ballistic missile from a submarine
to demonstrate, mainly to Asia, that we can do that," speculated Ellsworth.
Ellsworth said such tests were carried out in the Atlantic to demonstrate America's power to the Soviets, when there was a Soviet Union, but he doesn't believe an ICBM has previously been tested by the U.S. over the Pacific.
Officially, at least, the projectile remains a mystery missile.
I see no matter what anybody posts, you refuse to open your eyes to facts. I am done conversing with you.Right.
IS THIS A WARNING FROM NORTH KOREA ABOUT THE G-20 SUMMIT THAT IS GOING TO BE IN SOUTH KOREA THIS WEEK?
It was on for a few solid seconds, and I literally marveled over it.
This was a little pre-widespread-internet, so I would understand a relative lack of contemporaneous mention.
And believe me, in the heat of action, things can happen that you didn't intend -- like a failure to remove a logo. I never did see that logo/watermark again. There was no graphic logo, just NSA - National Security Agency
I saw what I saw, dude. No amount of trying to convince me otherwise, will work.
At least one pilot did ... his flight was inbound to either JFK or Laguardia out of Boston. He was over eastern LI just a few miles from TWA Flt. 800 ... he reported seeing a missile plume arching up towards the aircraft. This pilot was also a reserve Air Nat'l Guard pilot.
Yeah add that Oprah was in her 757 with Travolta piloting to go pick up MO because BO told her she looked fugly in her vintage dress and Oprah farted and accidentally sent off the test missle and the missle landed in the ocean and met with her huge fart bubble and the bubble then created a new planet for all liberals to move too.
Beale would have tracked this. 456th Bomb Wing 1966-1968, 9TH SAR Wing as well.
.Cheez..what a mystery...
The PAVE PAWS coverage area is immense!
Here is a map of it (I was at the 6MWS, Cape Cod AFS):
Google Jack Cashill on TWA 800.
At least one pilot did ... his flight was ...Wrong; mis-attribution, faulty memory wishful thinking on your part (have debated and debated this issue over the years and no one has what you purport.)
Recommend go back and re-read the NTSB interviews w/pilots ...
That may be true. However, if SOMETHING were to happen, you’d think it’d be something more than a missile contrail that no one can explain and the impression of the entire US military scratching their heads.
This accomplishes nothing. No ‘credible threat’, no reason to ramp up the military readiness levels, just a bunch of people going “WTF just happened?”.
Thanks- that’s what I thought too.
I’m wondering why the news/cables aren’t covering this more extensively- they’re chatting about lots of other “news” and it doesn’t feel as though they’re holding back.
This is one of those times when nothing matches ..
A foreign power launched off our coast and caught us with our pants down.
That is possible.
One of our own subs lit one off accidentally.
People say it takes nothing short of a major conspiracy on board.
Some goofball built a rocket and launched it without FAA approval.
Sure, he did that from his own missile-launching submarine; but for some extra fun he decided to launch not from his private Pacific island but right here. /s
Our nutso White House occupant was trying to send a message to someone.
Not likely at all. Pentagon would know all about it, and the notices would be sent to other countries ahead of time. Obama doesn’t need secrecy or excuses for a training or a test launch. Besides, the “message” that has been sent is not very good for the USA.
IMO there are only two plausible options. First, it was a legitimate but poorly planned test launch from a US submarine. Second, it was an act of war by some foreign power (probably not China or Russia - with their ICBMs they don’t need such cheap tricks.) Without knowing more, a miscommunication within the US Navy seems to be more likely.
ANOTHER SUBJECT:I saw on local NC news this morning that the usual “SONIC BOOM” could happen anytime. The weather man was actually warning about it.
The Evil George Soro’s........

No way.
I mean seriously. NO WAY an ICBM c=could “accidentally” be launched.
The whole point of a Boomer is to launch these things with out being detected before reaching its launch window. It takes a WHOLE crew to launch them. Not just one guy leaning up against a console button. It does not work that way, isn’t set up even remotely like that.
Anyone buying that BS story doesn’t know shit about how a Boomer runs. My husband served as an E6 on one in the 90’s. Has an Admirals Commendation, switched out a Nav Gyro for heavens sake, and THAT is a no BS exercise right there. One mistake on any sub can sink it. Boomers are designed so that one man, or even two cannot launch the missiles. The whole crew would have to believe 1000% that this was a legitimately ordered launch. That does NOT happen on accident.
Here’s one: Some homer made his own rocket and launched it.

this was either a test launch goof up or an act of war that is being downplayed by the government.
