Gates urges Congress to repeal gay ban now

MELBOURNE, Australia – U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Congress should act quickly, before new members take their seats, to repeal the military's ban on gays serving openly in the military.

He, however, did not sound optimistic that the current Congress would use a brief postelection session to get rid of the law known as "don't ask, don't tell."

"I would like to see the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell" but I'm not sure what the prospects for that are," Gates said Saturday, as he traveled to defense and diplomatic meetings in Australia.

Unless the lame-duck Congress acts, the repeal effort is considered dead for now.

Worst Sec Def we’ve had in quite a while. DennisW said it pretty well. “What a useless tool.” He’s certainly useless to us, that is. He’s quite useful to Obambi.

Does Gates realize that DADT doesn’t apply to the SecDef? He can come out of the closet any time he wants.

Yep. Just what you said.

I was on this guy’s case when he started pushing that BS that essentially we had to put our arms down and put our arms around Afghanistan.

Eff that. Destroy the enemy and put the fear of sudden and sure violence in the hearts and minds of all survivors so they stop breeding this crap that kills innocent people.

At one time, a lot of FReepers admired this a-hole.

I know I didn't. I knew he was trouble from the start. I didn't see much admiration for him around here either, as it was well known he was a member of Baker's Iraq Study Group. We also didn't like to see Rumsfeld go.

Gates should concentrate on winning wars instead of making sure that homosexuals get into the military. Nice priorities.

“Why did Obama appeal that ruling ?”

Supposedly it is because the administration wants to control the timing of the change, but methinks the real reason is Obama wants credit (and gay votes) for ending the policy.

RE: Gates urges Congress to repeal gay homosexual sex ban now

Let's not forget that there is the leftist media at work always seeking to undermine all things conservative.

I would agree that on this issue Gates is but a spineless useful idiot; however, I do not see him leading the homosexual agenda charge. He is but a professional military career bureaucrat now that will go with the flow in any direction taking the path of least resistance. In my opinion, he is not a leader, not a warrior BUT a wimp -0zero's lapdog wimp -the "military" rubber stamp...

-actual quotes:

"I would like to see the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell" but I'm not sure what the prospects for that are,"

"Partly I think things will depend on our assessment next spring and early summer of how we're doing," Gates said. "I think that will have the biggest impact on the president's decision in terms of the pacing."

Why don’t we let the members of our military decide? They’re the ones who will have to deal with it.

Is Gates even a Republican? What a useless tool.

Nope. Registered as neither.

Didn't "serve" in the military either. Well, the CIA assigned him duty in the Air Force, giving him a 2nd LT commission, just to make it "official." His CIA assigned job in the Air Force? "Intelligence" briefings.

Is he a "useless tool?" Apparently not if one is gay or lesbian. For them, he a is most useful tool.

In other words they are globalist corporatists who have a delusional ideology that dictates they believe that all other ideologies are irrelevant.
On the other hand, we have neoconservatives who are Wilsonians, believeing in global Democracy will lead to peace.
Both sides are twits who ignore history and religion.

I can honestly say that on many issues I have liked SecDef Gates policies and ideas. He has done good. However, this one FOOLISH act on his part NEGATES anything good he might have accomplished. SecDef Gates needs to be removed NOW...As does CJCS Admiral Mullins. They are both INSANE on the homosexual issue and MUST GO NOW.

Resurgent Congress.....take note. Don’t listen to this fool. Keep open/practicing homosexuals out of military service. Force the President to fire Gates & Mullin and replace them with more conservative thinkers.

Is Gates a homosexual or something?

Seriously, who else would try to force homosexuality onto US Service Members in such a desperate manner?

What a loser.

I suppose the "homosexuality survey results" that DOD "gathered" from the Soldiers is a bunch of horsesh!t as well.

What a sick, disgusting group of people are in the DOD hierarchy these days.

“I see this as all by design. I am seriously entertaining a law suit against the President and the DOD over the right of Chaplains to live out their faiths. I will NOT be tolerant of homosexuals saying the choice they make trumps my God given right to my faith which says homosexuality is a sin. It does them NO HARM to say this or believe it but many of them want that right stripped from us all.”

Concur fully. I can openly tell someone living in hetereosexual immorality that my beliefs teach they are living in sin. Of course, I cannot kick them out of the military for doing so......unless it is adultery AND affects the unit’s morale/discipline in some way.

It won’t just be chaplains to be hurt by this. Anyone with common morality will be told bye bye....even if they don’t try to push it on others. Morality and ethics are tied to each other. A moral people will be ethical. An immoral people will be unethical. A lack of ethics destroys an army.....turns it into an armed rabble.
