Television comedians Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert drew tens of thousands of people to the National Mall on Saturday, promising to skewer partisan politics three days before contentious U.S. elections.
The Comedy Central hosts' "Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear" started off as part slapstick comedy show and part outdoor festival concert.
Stewart opened the festivities by declaring that "10 million" people showed up, representing all ethnic groups in America.
"It is a perfect demographic sampling of the American people," said Stewart, who hosted U.S. President Barack Obama on his show on Wednesday.
"As you know, if you have too many white people at your rally, then your cause is racist, but if you have too many people of color at your rally, then you must be asking for something: special rights -- like eating in restaurants or piggy back rides -- something that we as a society are not ready to give," he added.
The rally, widely viewed as a response to "August's "Restoring Honor" rally organized by conservative talk show host Glenn Beck, blurred the lines between satire and political activism.

FOR
STEWART?
Saw the sign on the Comedy Central broadcast. Fat rounded letters with different-colored horizontal stripes...
No screenshot, though.
Cheers!
Than Restore the Honor Rally on 8/28/10.
I was there on 8-28. And living here, I know the land area intimately.
Draw an elliptical circle around the crowd mass only.
Subtract the pool area...and this one today looks to be much larger.
tony bennett sang God bless America
Gotta love Fox News—they reported “hundreds” in attendence this morning.
“Subtract the pool area...and this one today looks to be much larger.”
Huffington bussed in 15000 people for free. Even if it were larger than Beck’s, it’s not larger than 9-12-09 and Promise Keepers and is ill timed as it keeps the libs away from scrambling for votes...HAHA!
See comment #90.
Cheers
I was at 9-12-09. This was much larger.
“much larger” - what’s your guesstimate of today’s crowd vs. what 300K to 500K for Beck and how many for 9/12/09 - 500K?
Did you go to Promise Keepers in the 90s? LOL...
In any case, regardless of whether you’re right or not, my previous points hold...this will not hold back the wave...let them feel good about this free bus ticket crowd if they want to - they’ll be licking their wounds on Wed.
You are right but you will never convince anyone here.
Big deal, we already know there are millions of losers in this country, it doesn’t make them any more right.
Pathetic. They will probably call it a success because 10.000 must be about twice their average audience on a good day. Combined.
But not enough. ;*)
(We conservatives made a LOT of calls and went to LOTS of doors today!)
Those in attendance wouldn’t have been making calls today, though. I’ve met enough of them to know that they go to these things as social events. It’s fun to make your little signs and paint your face and listen to music. Making phone calls is something a small, very dedicated group of people in that age group are willing to do.
I may be wrong but I think the Tea Party might skew somewhat older, and those folks, if they are going to get involved, know what that means, and what actually works. Hooking up at a hippie-ish event is fun, but the smell of patchouli oil gets kinda old after awhile.
Thanks for the info and ping! Sending it out right now!
I agree with you that this will not stem the tidal wave coming Tuesday.
Cheers!
I'll bet not one of this group has ever made a phone call or knocked on a door for any candidate.........even their 'messiah.'
But while they were partying, thousands of volunteers were making even more than thousands of calls and knocking on thousands of doors to GOTV, and the results of that effort will make these boys and girls very unhappy.
They'll be mad on Tuesday, and we'll be tired, but elated at what the real work of elections results in.......VICTORY.
The photo of the Glenn Beck rally in post #43 shows a big crowd on the left side in addition to the crowd along the pool. The distance the crowd covers is also longer than the Rally today.
Did you hear Bill Press whining on his radio show about just what you mention here? I read a transcript of his comments and I could hear his whiney voice going on about “Why did you have to have it THIS weekend, when we should be working towards Tuesday?”
It indicates to me that the folks who showed up at this have already resigned themselves to defeat.
