Television comedians Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert drew tens of thousands of people to the National Mall on Saturday, promising to skewer partisan politics three days before contentious U.S. elections.
The Comedy Central hosts' "Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear" started off as part slapstick comedy show and part outdoor festival concert.
Stewart opened the festivities by declaring that "10 million" people showed up, representing all ethnic groups in America.
"It is a perfect demographic sampling of the American people," said Stewart, who hosted U.S. President Barack Obama on his show on Wednesday.
"As you know, if you have too many white people at your rally, then your cause is racist, but if you have too many people of color at your rally, then you must be asking for something: special rights -- like eating in restaurants or piggy back rides -- something that we as a society are not ready to give," he added.
The rally, widely viewed as a response to "August's "Restoring Honor" rally organized by conservative talk show host Glenn Beck, blurred the lines between satire and political activism.

Tens of thousands...about par for a large county fair, I’d say...complete with the “freak show”.

It’s eating them alive that Beck drew a monster crowd, isn’t it? One lame, slap-dash attempt after another to replicate it.

If the anecdotes reported here are representative, then the best word I can dredge up to describe this gathering is “lame”.

Funny...don't recall seeing those green patches of grass in photos of the "Restoring Honor" rally.
Reuters: tens of thousands of people
FAIL. Not only for the attendance, but because it will not repair the damage Stewart did earlier this week when he helped Obama become a laughing stock on his program. The clips I saw were a disaster for Obama. This won't fix that.

I just turned on CNN. Dana Basher (someone put her head in a vice sideways) is a Democrat shill.
One white guy (amongst thousands of white guys) is holding up a sign that says "Fear the Amish". LOL, a FReeper.

Yep, and this one even gave away free snacks on the buses that brought them all from NYC LOL. Coke and Stonybrook antagonized a huge group of people in order to cater to a small fraction of the country.

Gotta say, that was a pretty large gathering. Won’t make of a difference, though.

this lame event had no point except to get a bunch of college students away from campus to party in the nation’s capital
I think a lot of lucky liberal guys get laid tonight thanks to John Stewart, but I don’t know how this thing had any other point

Ed Schultz drew more crowd than Restoring Sanity. What an embarassment.

If that was 160,000 we had over a million at the 9/12 last year.

The last rally had people paid to be there, were bussed in, given box lunches, and still had fewer than 1/2 of the people of Beck’s Rally.
How many busses did Ariana Huffington fill up and send in?
Talk about “astroturf.”
