In the first of what could be a nationwide spate of austerity-prompted spending cuts, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Wednesday canceled an over-budget $9-billion-plus commuter train tunnel between his state and Manhattan - shrugging off the Obama administration's efforts to save it.
Mr. Christie said his state "simply no longer can afford" ballooning costs for the Trans-Hudson Express Tunnel, and the Republican governor said canceling the project is the type of decision he promised voters he would make when he was elected a year ago.
The move ends the nation's largest public works project, and adds fuel to the debate over the limits of government spending and the depths of debt.
House Republicans have promised to take aim at stimulus projects if they win control of the chamber in Tuesday's elections, promising in their "Pledge to America" to "cancel unspent 'stimulus' funds."
"The American people shouldn't consider any spending program to be totally off the table. Whether it's grants to individuals, infrastructure and spending on government employees themselves, nothing is off the table," said Brian Riedl, a budget analyst at the conservative-leaning Heritage Foundation, which is advocating for billions of dollars in spending cuts.

No money, no choo-choo's!
The media tried to imply that he was caving in on the funding last week. I guess they got that wrong as well
Hot Damn! And good on him.
Don’t worry, Rick Snyder in Michigan wants choo choo money.
(We really need closed primaries here)
Good for him. People in government actually CUTTING programs? Clone him!!! Send him to Washington DC.
In Tampa I just voted against the Stupid Liberal Chatahoochee Coo Coo. Insane Bullet Train to Orlando. They are NUTS!
I heard CBS drive-time top-of -the -hour news actually find commuters who were supportive of the decision. “It would be nice if we had the money. There are lots of things I’m doing without these days because I don’t have the money.”
Wooot! Awesome. Go Christie! Oh, the Keynesian diehard’s are FURIOUS. Krugman will need to devote 10 columns and 37 blog posts whining and moaning about this.
Christie is definitely proving all the purists wrong who claimed he was too “moderate” during the primary.
I'll bet. Just think of all those Sopranos type "no show" and "no work" jobs that just disappeared. Then there's all the payoffs to all those State, County, and City inspectors that won't get made.
The wailing you hear is a bunch of parasites watching their rice bowls get smashed to bits.
No bucks, no Buck Rogers.
Amen to that! I'm only voting for Rick Snyder because he's not Bonero. I'm hoping the legislature will keep him in check. *eyes rolling*
Not quite. Governor Christie only cut a future program that didn’t exist yet. Still he managed to infuriate the “spend more now” crowd of liberal Democrat politicians and their sycophants, including most writers at The New York Times.
Here in NY we actually use public transportation. The subways do 5.1 million passengers a week day and that’s just the subways. There’s numerous other commuter lines. I’ve seen public transportation in other places. It’s hardly used. The shame is because of government bloat and corruption stuff like this can’t get done.
A bullet train to Orlando? WT... Did something happen to I-4? Haven’t been down there for a while. Didn’t see anything on the news either. :-)
In Michigan we’re getting a light rail connection that will link the suburbs directly with downtown Detroit...for the unlikely event that anyone will want to go there.
Watch businesses begin to spring up in NJ.
Pray for the Election
The Northeast Corridor Line in New Jersey -- which is the AMTRAK / New Jersey Transit rail line segment that connects northern New Jersey with midtown Manhattan -- has been experiencing an endless series of problems in recent months. Most of these problems have nothing to do with the limited capacity of the existing system but have everything to do with technical problems with switches, train equipment, overhead catenary wire, and other things. Digging two new tunnels and doubling the track capacity isn't going to fix those problems, and these commuters all know this.
What's the purpose of spending $10+ billion on a major railroad project like this if people still can't rely on the ability of the transit agency to run the trains on time?
Oh yes. They want to build a train from downtown Tampa to Downtown Orlando for Billions. Right down the middle of I-4 how stupid can you get.
Dang, this guy is good!

How is this positioned on the ballot?? Establishment of a transit district? A bond issue? Citizen initiative?
