He was a young Chinese guy. I think the problem may be that we are about two or three blocks away from Bellevue Hospital - the oldest looney bin in NYC. So we have day patients wondering up and down the street. Didn’t think about it when we signed our lease!

Not an unusual story at all. Ghetto thugs from Brooklyn and Bronx are everywhere in the Union Square and other downtown areas after the clubs close. It’s really bad these days.
According to comments attached to the Daily News article, the feuding groups were black. The article craftily avoids mention of race so that is a usual giveaway. The restauarant is a noted hang-out for black “thugs” from other ghetto areas in New York City who come down to lower Manhattan for the “club” scene. Interesting how when I read the article my mind’s eye saw the groups as “white”. The media in this country has for a long time exceeded its First Amendment mandate, slipping into blatant manipulation, bias, and racial propaganda in reporting. It needs to be revamped. What also troubles me are the number of stories and articles dealing with serious domestic events here which get ignored by the mainstream media and only show up in the foreign press. This is a disgrace and gives the lie to any claims of taking First Amendment privileges seriously. Just a suggestion to freepers, before posting comments please read the original article and any comments attached to it. You can then post less redundant and more probing responses.

I haven’t been to that particular diner, but it’s a fashionable part of Greenwich Village, which has spread out in all directions over the years. As it says, a lot of night spots around.
Maybe drug connected, users or dealers.
Probably a mental patient from Bellevue. It’s a small consolation, but it’s better that it was a metal patient from Belleview than a ghetto kid or lone wolf. The ghetto kids and lone wolvs are the real dangerous ones. Be careful.

I’ve had 2 run-ins with mental patients on the Manhattan streets. The first one I was able to get rid of by yelling at him. The other one I had to physically push away. But I never felt that my life was in danger.
But back in the Dinkins days, I had a gang of ghetto thugs try to mug me and threaten to stab me with a knife if I didn’t hand over “Fi Dollah”. I told the thug to to F-off and I immediately crossed the street. They tried to go after me, but I was able to get away. My self-preservation instincts did kick in. The ghetto thugs had cold, evil eyes and they’re the ones to fear. They don’t really have anything to live for.
