In fact they are elite French policemen who were deployed to the historic centre of Lyon yesterday to deal with rioting students.

President Nicolas Sarkozy took the extreme measure in the face of growing protests against an unpopular law aimed at increasing the retirement age from 60 to 62.
Nicknamed Sarkos Stormtroopers, the GIPN (National Police Intervention Group) faced down 2,000 youngsters in Place Bellecour where cars had been set on fire and shop windows smashed.
The elite unit, whose motto is Cohesion Brings Strength, was set up in 1972 to deal with terrorists and hostage takers.
Deploying them on the streets was a tactical decision deemed necessary because of the acts of violence and vandalism aimed at the community, said an interior ministry spokesman.

The French Government has no real choice but to start knocking heads. Or circle the drain as debt destroys their Nation.
is east point in somalia ???
Does he respond to your emails? Just a suggestion, but I strongly believe that a phone call to a staffer is much more effective.
It’s waaaay easy to hit the Delete button.
Here’s how to bring real control...
1. Expel all foreign students (if only temporarily).
2. Expel all arabs and muslim with visas and passports (if only temporarily).
3. Give the ultimatum that there will be a 24 hour “right of way” to clear the streets. After the 24 hours, anyone on the streets during another 48 hour (or longer) curfew will be shot if they show signs of resistance or assemble in groups.
4. Announce that socialism has failed and Marxism is dead, and the country will begin switching back to a free market society.
5. Announce that the best way people can provide for themselves is to begin bartering with each other, with currency, goods and services.
6. Announce that all goods and services will be taxed at a flat tax rate of no more than 18% for a period of ten to twenty years.
7. Tell people they will have to learn to care for themselves and their families.
8. Ask the people to pray, for deliverance from the evils of socialism.
A conservative government would be PUMMELED by “world opinion” for this. France’s government...not a peep.
Actually a conservative government wouldn't be in this situation.
“...Heres how to bring real control....1 through 8...”
Man, you are a dreamer, aren’t you?!?
“Announce that socialism has failed and Marxism is dead, and the country will begin switching back to a free market society...”
They’ll NEVER do that. It’s the left’s god.
Exactly, this action means the situation in France is beyond serious. We may see a few skirmishes this weekend, but major actions are planned for next week by the Unions.
Sarkozy knows this and is trying to get some level of control NOW, because if the Union threats are real and based on the current action there is little doubt these are empty threats...France will burn like nothing we've seen in the past few years.
I've been posting stuff the last few days as extended news, but I put this in Breaking as it is being grossly under reported. Sarkozy and France are in real, real trouble.
Ah... but the discussion is good to have.
Our Republicans are going to need to put in place “austerity cuts” starting in January.
Unions, particularly the SEIU, have been guests at the White House how often in the past 2 years?
What position did the SEIU president accept in the administration?
Will we be as bad as France? Who knows? I suspect the stalemate between 0bama and the new Congress will bring about the crash. In our case the ‘government’ will be the one that goes on strike. The banks closed, credit stopped, nothing moves. Unlike France where it is the people...here it will be the crash of the government.
And when the dust settles...
We can start over.
What?? But I thought the French were so sophisticated; so enlightened. Could it be the US public school teachers have been feeding us a lot of baloney all along?
This is bullcorn. This is bolshevism straight up. I wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t the same thing in Grease. You’ve got professional anarchists and protesters doing what they do best, giving the country a black eye internationally, while most of the people realize that the govt is doing what must be done. Give’m a whiff of the grapeshot, I say.
This is a real showdown. Left vs the State.
You are correct, the US National news is treating these like mere soccer riots....
Yes, I am from Paris and say what a disgrace! So glad I am an American now as the protesters are a bunch of spoiled brats...only problem is they are all grown up!
I leave for Paris on November 2, with a flight from Paris to Venice on November 5. I wonder if I am screwed.

Whassa mattah? Afraid mummy and dada will find out you're flunking out? Maybe attending classes instead of rioting would have helped.

The communists have rioted in France since the 1840’s. The government ought to put a final end to it. The only good anarchist is a dead one.
An opinion poll published Friday by the BVA institute, showed that most French voters back the strikes, by a margin of 69 percent to 29

French Union Calls for ‘Massive’ Strikes Next Week
“The government remains intransigent. We need to continue with massive action as soon as next week,” he said. “We will ask the unions for strong action that will allow people to stop work and go on to the streets.”
