As many of you know, my family and I do not watch television. Well, perhaps I should clarify. We do not watch televised programming. Needless to say, we don't keep up on popular programming.
Last week, during a family outing, we found a used DVD set of the first 'LOST' series. For those of you who are not familiar with my posts, as a general rule, I don't trust what is usually produced in Hollywood. I find a majority of the films and programs to be veiled Socialist/Communist, nihilistic propaganda.
The 'LOST' series did not disappoint. I found the liberal stereotypes to by typical, and J.J. and Co. didn't bother to veil their ideology in the series.
You have your typical "redneck"(Sawyer), "Conservative"(Shannon), "religious wacko"(John Locke), and the rest of the cast and motley crue of social rejects and garden variety criminals. To be "fair", we're also given your kinder-gentler do-gooders as well.
If I sound cynical it is only because I am. I found this series to be devoid of any transcending quality, and quite frankly, I feel as thoe J.J. is actually pulling the wool over the viewers eyes.
Must to my chagrin, some in our family finds the series to be very entertaining. So much so that after we viewed the first season, my loved ones bought the second. I find this program to be a complete waste of time, but I sit and view the episodes so that our family can share time together as well as discuss the series.
I am here to ask Freepers to help me out; bottom-line me here. I can no longer endure this series without finding out where the writers are taking the viewers.
Here is what I believe the jest of the story is. In just a few words, it seems to me that the island is either Dante's Purgatory, some place in the "after-life". I believe that everyone on the island is dead, but that the "Hatch" and underground dwellings like it are perhaps just another level of hell, or something like that.
I don't have the time, nor to I wish to waste anymore in expressing my opinion on what I believe is the overall message in the 'LOST' series.
So, would someone please provide me with a summary of what's going on, and what the conclusion to this story is?
What happens to Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Michael, Walt, Vincent, Charlie, Claire, Aaron, Rousseau, John Locke, Hurly? What happened to Jack's father? What is the source of the smoke and explosions in the jungle? What happened to Rose and Bernard?
I'm LOST.
I always saw a vague resemblance between the Lost characters and the Gilligan’s Island characters. For instance, the professor on GI and doctor on Lost were somewhat the same type of character. Hurley was sort of like Gilligan, and so on.
yes indeed, BEST show ever. I don’t like regular tv either. LOST is not tv.

LOST is not meant for a passive viewer. Most people need thir entertainment to be force fed to them, hence the hostiity for the show.
You will be glad you watched. It is a wonderful show. The oly lull is the beginning of the third season, but by the second half of that season it is full steam ahead!
NCIS jumped the shark two seasons ago.

I’d just like to cut in here and say that I have recently become a huge fan of Dr. Who on BBC America. As a kid growing up in Detroit, I used to occasionally watch and be terribly bored by the old version of this show back in the 60s and 70s. The new version is incredible!
I love Dr Who too, but I enjoyed the old ones as well, bit I have to say David Tennant is my favorite.
It’s funny, most people who like LOST also like Dr Who, 24, Battlestar Galactica and Dexter.
I have therefore watched the first five seasons of LOST on DVD and the sixth season is sitting in my living room, still in shrink wrap, I'll probably get to it later in the fall.
I actually have found it to be quite an entertaining series. The producers did a very good job with it and the cinematography (of the Hawaiian islands) is stunning. I like the method by which each episode focuses on the backstory of one of the main characters by way of flashback. Each episode, you learn a little more about each of the characters and your initial impressions of the characters can change radically.
I found it to be devoid of political ideology so for those Freepers worried about that, don't worry.
Like any movie or TV show, it requires a certain suspension of disbelief. SO don't obsess over the fact that the characters always seem to keep themselves and their clothing squeaky clean. I used to joke to my wife that they must have a strip mall somewhere on the island with a laundromat and barber shop that we aren't seeing! And Hurley stays fat, so I guess that the pineapples must be high in carbs...and just how much medicine and mini liquor bottles get stored on an airplane anyhow! They seemed to never run out.
Anyway, once you get past the first few seasons, the series starts taking you on some pretty incredible twists and turns. I recommend watching on DVD or DVR so that you can re-wind and watch certain sections over again. But don't worry too much keeping up with all of the plot lines. I don't even think the writers of the show (and there were many) can keep those all straight.
So if you are looking for a nice clean ending, don't get your hopes up. I can see after watching Season 5 that there is no way everything can get wrapped up neatly in just one more season. But throughout, the show has been very entertaining, I can't remember one "dud" episode.
Benjamin Linus was my favorite character - what a wackjob, and this guy takes a lot of beatings! And Kate Austin is pretty hot. She's like Mary-Ann (from Gilligan's Island) only she is not somebody to be messed around with.
So it's a fun show to watch, just don't attempt to read a lot of deep meaning into it. BTW, my theory (and I have yet to see season 6) is that everybody on the show is dead but they are in purgatory.

BTW I’m trying to watch Hawaii 5-O for Daniel Dae Kim—jury’s still out on this show for me.
I think that despite your protests, the show has you hooked. One the one hand, you say it’s a waste of time. On the other hand, you just have to know how it all turns out. That’s cheating. If you really believe it’s a waste of time, then who cares how it ends? It’s fiction.
I watched religiously Lost, when it was on, hoping that they would resolve some of plots. They never did. As someone on a previous thread wrote, you need to have an understanding of the theological underpinnings of purgatory to understand Lost. These are lost souls looking for their way out.
Some of the drama is good, but, so much is contrived that it is meaningless.
Ever watch Gilligan's Island?
Lost is just a remake of Gilligan's Island, using modern stereotypes.

J.J. Abrams did not intend for this series to be a parody, but I view it as the perfect symbol of Hollywood; they’re ‘LOST’ on their own island of the mind.

Well, you are on the right track... just take the last episode for what it’s worth... and it’s not much.
