The Dems have a real problem in the state, a decided lack of bench. Mitch won’t run, he (and sis) just paid a high price to buy him the NOLA Mayorship, and there won’t be any Congressmembers (even if Cedric Richmond wins and runs, he’ll end up the same way that Cleo Fields and Dollar Bill Jefferson did when they ran against Mike Foster). That only leaves Atty Gen Buddy Caldwell, and isn’t he a potential future party switch ? What was so pathetic was the Dems had to recruit a Republican to challenge Jindal, I just don’t see anyone remotely able to win and beat him next year (in fact, as of now, only 1 person is listed as a challenger, an Independent running to Jindal’s right).
There has been a lot of chatter among some local pundits that Bobby won’t finish out his first term, or won’t finish out his second, or some such talk that he’ll be gone due to a 2014 senate run or being a VP pick on a 2012 ticket (Interestingly, few think he’ll actually run for president, citing his poorly received presidential response). Whatever the reason, the talk probably did a lot to motivate Dardenne into running for the post, seeing himself as a governor-by-succession if Bobby should resign.
I’m actually a little disappointed that Dardenne is job hopping. I would have liked to see another state legislator run and win the post to increase the GOP bench even more. Now his secretary of state post will be at risk, as it will be up after the Dems get their clocks cleaned this year. Although, I have to say their record in statewide races, Landrieu and Caldwell excluded, has been dismal as of late.
In regards to Caldwell, he filed suit against Obamacare (the only Dem Attorney General to do so) and filed a brief in support of Prop. 8, so a party switch wouldn’t be surprising.
He's just about the only person who can take down Sister Saint Mary.
That witch is a lucky woman. I don’t think she’ll be winning a 4th term. Jindal or not.
