Motorists on N.J. Turnpike, Garden State Parkway to get high-tech traffic 'forecasts' (TEXTING)

The traffic version of Willard Scott and Al Roker will be coming soon to the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway.

Motorists on the state’s two biggest highways will be provided high-tech traffic "forecasts" to alert them about potential bottlenecks before they happen. Using complex computer models that have been said to predict traffic flows with up to 93 percent accuracy, the Turnpike Authority plans to put its new "Traffic Prediction Tool" into use early next year.

Drivers would see the forecasts on existing highway message signs or via e-mail or text. Motorists get real-time alerts now, but the traffic forecast has the ability to predict congestion before it happens, based on traffic patterns detected by transponders and road sensors, as well as historical traffic patterns.

The highway agency has already run live models of the forecasts, with encouraging results.

"We’ve found that on the Turnpike, we can forecast 10 minutes in advance with 90 percent accuracy," said Brian Gorman, the authority’s director of technology. "On the Parkway, we’ve been able to forecast 10 minutes out with 93 percent accuracy."

The technology is already in use in Singapore and Stockholm.

Steve Carrellas, the New Jersey representative of the National Motorists Association driving rights group, was glad to hear the technology is coming to the Turnpike and Parkway.

"Information is good," he said. "Better information is better."

Traveling between New Jersey and his hometown in Rhode Island, Carrellas found real-time information on Interstate 95 in Connecticut to be useful, letting him know the exits where traffic was backed up and giving him the information to make choices.

The Turnpike Authority entered a $652,440 contract with En Pointe Technological Sales Inc. of California for licensing and a year of technical support.

What a joke. Does nobody do any homework.

In DFW we had flight status text billboards.

Some idiot had a wreck because he was looking at the billboards.

That forced DFW to turn them off.

Forecast, starting around 3pm traffic will start to pickup, peaking between 5pm and 6pm after which traffic will diminish significantly then around 7am traffic again will start to increase peaking around 8-9am, after which again it will start to decrease.

I wager $652,440 My prediction will have a better than 93% accuracy.

But seriously, to see how bad traffic is going to be on the NJ turnpike, all they have to do is count the number of ^@!#& Pennsylvania drivers that get on at the entrance ramps, because you know every one of them will eventually be in the left lane driving under the speed limit causeing massive backups behind them. So the more Pa. drivers there are, the slower the turnpike will be moving and again I wager $652,440 My prediction will have a better than 93% accuracy.

So let me get this straight ...

They will be texting me?

Great. So I will either be pulled over for using my cellphone or get into an accident because I was reading that text.

Only in NJ - lol

It’s pretty simple really - Friday night in the summer the Bennies clog the Parkway to go “Down the shore.” They clog it all up again on Monday morning.

LOL!

We get traffic just from people reading overhead traffic warning signs.

That’s it! I’m working from home from now on.

NJ Turnpike had a billboard with a hot chick wearing only a fur. It was good advertising, I wonder why it was taken down.
