The Pentagon has purchased and arranged for the destruction of 9,500 copies of a book so it can protect classified information it contains.
Lt. Colonel Anthony Shaffer's memoir "Operation Dark Heart" had become a headache for the Defense Department which determined after it had gone to print that it contained classified information. The book recounts the Army Reserve officer's experiences in Afghanistan in 2003 while working for the Defense Intelligence Agency.
An option being explored with the book's publisher was for the Pentagon to purchase the 9,500 copies of the book's first run so they could be destroyed.
Pentagon spokeswoman Lt. Col. April Cunningham confirms that is what happened earlier this week.

The US Army is getiing good at this.
They burned a shipment of bibles in Afghanisatn recently.
They won’t burn the Koran though.
If any of those 9,500 copies survived destruction, they would go for big bucks on eBay. Just sayin’.....
I’ll give it a week until it hits the web.
I’m not buying the state secrets line. Schaffer doesn’t seem like the type to give away national security info to make a buck.
I’m guessing there are embarrassing failures that are being hidden.
We are at war with Islam.
That, of course, is a secret which much never be revealed.
one book did go for 2K+ on ebay. I’m curious if it wasn’t the gov bidding on it. Then again, why didn’t ebay shut down that auction.
I think you nailed it.
It think "embarrassing failure" is just another way to say "nation building".
Now all books are in pdf format. All it takes is one email from a person in the chain
I am tempted to see if I can get it on my Kindle. Then I could somehow save it, I am sure. But, do I really want it? lol
Yes. You really want to.
Not sure what happened on the link. Anyway, it does show as availbale in hardcover and Kindle. I do not know if maybe it is an edited edition?
All they want to do is hide Able Danger. Thats what this is all about.
They don’t want people to know they dropped the ball.
“Im guessing there are embarrassing failures that are being hidden.”
Yep, he even said it exposed extremely incompetent leadship decisions. The 9/11 wars have been poorly run. We had Osama Bin Laden, the leadership refused to allow it. As Scott Adams of Dilbert books says, “Don’t step in the leadership.”
It is the edited edition. Read the bold product description.
Important Message for Customers
On Friday, August 13, 2010, just as St. Martins Press was readying its initial shipment of Operation Dark Heart, the Department of Defense expressed concern that its publication could cause damage to U.S. national security. The publication of the initial edition was canceled. However, after consulting with the author, Lt. Col. Anthony Shaffer, St. Martin’s Press agreed to incorporate some of the governments changes, which includes redacting classified text, into a revised edition.
