Pentagon destroys thousands of copies of Army officer's memoir

Washington (CNN) -- The Department of Defense recently purchased and destroyed thousands of copies of an Army Reserve officer's memoir in an effort to safeguard state secrets, a spokeswoman said Saturday.

"DoD decided to purchase copies of the first printing because they contained information which could cause damage to national security," Pentagon spokeswoman Lt. Col. April Cunningham said.

In a statement to CNN, Cunningham said defense officials observed the September 20 destruction of about 9,500 copies of Army Reserve Lt. Col. Anthony Shaffer's new memoir "Operation Dark Heart."

Shaffer says he was notified Friday about the Pentagon's purchase.

"The whole premise smacks of retaliation," Shaffer told CNN on Saturday. "Someone buying 10,000 books to suppress a story in this digital age is ludicrous."

Shaffer's publisher, St. Martin's Press, released a second printing of the book that it said had incorporated some changes the government had sought "while redacting other text he (Shaffer) was told was classified."

Like someone else said there will just be a second printing.

The second printing will have some items redacted. Read the Fox story linked at #9. The purpose of the Pentagon buying up the first printing was so the publisher would not lose money on the un-redacted first printing

The House Armed Services Committee, and the Subcommittee on Terrorism Hold a Joint Hearing on the Able Danger Program.
C-span canceled showing the open hearing at the last minute.
Why won’t the media let the public watch the “Demeanor” of the witnesses of the open hearing that started at 2:38pm on Feb. 15, 2006 about Able Danger???

Some of the comments are VERY interesting to read:

“Mass surveillance, control over the economy, propaganda disseminated through government controlled mass media—this is not where America is headed, this is where America is NOW. Totalitarianism at its finest. You may think you’re free, but the only thing you’re free to do is work, consume, and die.”

""The whole premise smacks of retaliation," Shaffer told CNN on Saturday. "Someone buying 10,000 books to suppress a story in this digital age is ludicrous."

I doubt it. "Retaliation" requires some level of intelligence, whereas this is obviously stupid.

"Actually, a few days before 9/11 we did catch an effort to recruit suicide candidates in the US. The recruiter seems to have some proximity to the muslim brotherhood and/or mr. Obama.

Since 99.999% of us never heard of this, I think it's your patriotic duty to explain this, with references, please.

Holly smokes E! Able Danger. Funny thing. I thought back on those many postings and exchanges by many of us regarding the Able Danger issue, a few days back. Then bingo. I see you mention AD now.
One can only wonder what slipped through the printing press that made the DoD jump.

"DoD decided to purchase copies of the first printing because they contained information which could cause damage to national security," Pentagon spokeswoman Lt. Col. April Cunningham said.

If information can cause damage to national security, it is likely classified as "Confidential." There are laws about releasing Confidential information. Before publishing/releasing information, military authors are required to clear their work through Public Affairs.

This doesn't add up...

PATRIOTS had an obligation to use the information they had to stop 9/11. Instead they prosecuted a turf war...which nobody won.
“Patriots” followed but “lost track” of atta and his buds.
“Patriots” have tried to shut Tony Shaffer down and destroy his reputation in the process. When was the last time you heard from Kurt Weldon?
There are a lot of things that can not be discussed on an open forum, patriotism notwithstanding NOR open to question.
Meantime, the recruiter in question IS muslim brotherhood and received a personal invitation to obama’s Cairo speech.

And PS, I have discussed this before on previous posts, but I am not going to look them up or I would burn my eyes out.
