Lindsey Graham: White House talks just went 'dead'
POLITICO ^ | September 20, 2010 | JOSH GERSTEIN

Posted on 09/20/2010 5:13:59 AM PDT by maggief

For much of the early part of the year, Sen. Lindsey Graham and the White House were locked in heated negotiations over legislation that could close the military detention center at Guantanamo Bay, move some of the war-on-terror prisoners there to the U.S. mainland and create a system to detain Al Qaeda members captured later.

The talks were so intense that they spurred suspicion on both the right and the left — and contributed to the South Carolina Republican’s status as White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel’s most frequent visitor among Republican lawmakers.

“I thought we were close to getting a deal,” Graham told POLITICO last week. “I had some meetings where I walked out of the White House and said, ‘This is great.’ These were better meetings than I ever had with the Bush administration.”

But sometime around May, according to Graham, the line of communication with the White House shut down.

“It went completely dead,” Graham said. “Like it got hit by a Predator drone.”

The breakdown, however, could leave the Obama administration with even less of a chance to resolve key issues, particularly if Republicans make substantial gains or retake either chamber — or both chambers — of Congress. Graham is viewed as a moderate willing to negotiate, but the current slate of GOP candidates, influenced by the tea party, have tacked hard right and probably would be less willing to open a dialogue with the White House.

Is that right? I’ve been wondering since he’s been censured more than once? in the state.

When is he up for re-election? I’m ready to send $ to his challenger.

When the Tea Party candidate challenges Graham in the primaries, we’ll just see if he tries to woo the people of North Carolina. These RINO’s are finding out we’re serious about change in politics.

Rahm and Lindsey spending all that time together? Let the rumors fly!

This must be the first time Lindsey didn't completely cave in to the entire Dem position, in the interest of “reaching across the aisle.

Do you suppose the Tea Party message is getting through to him?

Well he [Graham] is the Pride of South Carolina.

Not so, at least among the informed voters. Jim DeMint and Nikki Haley are the pride of South Carolina conservatives. (I think I should know, I live here.)

Don’t worry about him being reelected. When election times comes, he, like John Mc Cain, will say the right things and will be shooed in again.

Lindsey gets reelected here due to the state Republican Party's refusal to close the primaries, and to the Republicans having some voters with the intellect of those on the democrat side who picked Alvin Greene.

Graham is from SOUTH Carolina, not North Carolina. But never fear, we North Carolinians have our own senator to get rid of, Kay Hagan.

AHHH, the most frequent RINO visitor to the WH Sen. Lindsey Graham. Didn't he just say we needed to elect more RINOs to the Senate to repeal Obama-care? And don't forget that constitutional amendment on illegals, was your RINO friend in Delaware Mike Castle going to support that amendment Lindsey???

Ohhh, Lindsey, did they shut you out?

Well, take it like a man and quit your whining!

I read the piece several times, but I still can’t figure out what the problem is. In 2008, The One said he’d close GTMO if he got elected. Nobody who considered the question realistically thought that was a good idea.

Now it’s 2010, and nothing has changed, except that the murderous fanatics locked up at GTMO are two years older. The Left can conclude that The One is a lying opportunist if it wants. The rest of us always knew that. The main thing is that the murderous fanatics need to KEEP ON getting older at GTMO.

And the thought of watching Lindsey Graham pound sand simply warms my heart.

What is really REALLY sad is that I believe Lindsey is truly stupid enough to believe BO and his “team” really negotiate in good faith. He really DOESN’T believe they are a cabal of liars and communists.

He was re-elected in 2008 with 58% of the vote. Next up in 2014.

It is not that. They are just trying to find a way to roll some other republicans.
