WASHINGTON -- The number of people living in poverty has climbed to 14.3 percent of Americans, with the ranks of working-age poor reaching the highest level since at least 1965.
The Census Bureau says that about 43.6 million people, or 1 in 7, were in poverty last year. That's up from 39.8 million, or 13.2 percent, in 2008.
The number of people lacking health insurance rose from 46.3 million to 50.7 million, due mostly to the loss of employer-provided health insurance during the recession. Congress passed a health overhaul earlier this year to extend coverage to more people.
The statistics released Thursday cover President Barack Obama's first year in office, when unemployment climbed to 10 percent in the months after the financial meltdown.

We’ve put up dried apples for two years now.
I’ve gotten my kids used to oatmeal with dried apples. They love it.
If we’re looking at starving, oatmeal become an every meal thing. I’ve even made oatmeal quick bread that is amazing!
Recipe, please :)
This is the one I used. We added dried apples and some cinnamon. Yum!
* 1 cup rolled oats
* 1 cup flour
* 2 teaspoons baking powder
* 1/2 teaspoon salt
* 1 1/2 tablespoons honey
* 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
* 1 cup milk
Directions
1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
2. In a large bowl, combine oatmeal, flour, baking powder and salt. In a separate bowl, dissolve honey in vegetable oil then stir in the milk. Combine both mixtures and stir until a soft dough is formed. Form the dough into a ball and place on a lightly oiled baking sheet.
3. Bake in preheated oven for about 20 minutes.
They don't even call them 'food stamps' anymore, because they aren't even stamps (or even paper coupons).
They are Electronic Benefit Cards (basically ATM cards).
The program is called S.N.A.P, and Obama's gang adverstises that applying for it is "a snap!"
No joke - I am serious.
The EBT cards come in all colors.
They may look like this:
They are also called "Access" cards or "Vision" cards.
Half the world’s population lives on less than $2/day.
If your income is more than that, you’re not poor.
Thanks a ton, I hope to try it out soon!

Concerns regarding accuracy
In recent years, there have been a number of concerns raised about the official U.S. poverty measure. In 1995, the National Research Council’s Committee on National Statistics convened a panel on measuring poverty. The findings of the panel were that “the official poverty measure in the United States is flawed and does not adequately inform policy-makers or the public about who is poor and who is not poor.”
The panel was chaired by Robert Michael, former Dean of the Harris School of the University of Chicago. According to Michael, the official U.S. poverty measure “has not kept pace with far-reaching changes in society and the economy.” The panel proposed a model based on disposable income:
According to the panel’s recommended measure, income would include, in addition to money received, the value of non-cash benefits such as food stamps, school lunches and public housing that can be used to satisfy basic needs. The new measure also would subtract from gross income certain expenses that cannot be used for these basic needs, such as income taxes, child-support payments, medical costs, health-insurance premiums and work-related expenses, including child care.[42]
It appears Tea Party GOP conservatives will sweep the House and very possibly the Senate in November. Impeachment proceedings better be top priority for a clean slate.
Yeah, I have a theory about that. By my observation there is a certain percentage of the population, about 10%, who are just lazy and refuse to take advantage of the opportunities available to them. Life is a series of choices and the choices you make reflect who you are. Similarly, there is a certain percentage of the population that will be criminals, also about 10%. I'd put the politicians in that percentile, too. In addition, there is a certain percentage of the population that will succeed because they make good life choices and a certain percentage of the population who, through no fault of their own, simply cannot do for themselves. The ones that are left could go either way. Their destiny depends on the guidance they receive as children and the freedom and liberty they have as adults, as well as their own choices and efforts. It's a phenomenon as old as humanity itself.

How do you dry apples?
The recipe sounds wonderful. Will have to try this weekend. Thanks.
We have a dehydrator. A round one that stacks high. They are pretty cheap. Got an apple corer/peeler too. Takes about two days to process and dry a peck.
Then we pack them in ziplocks and store them. Yum!
Thanks for the information. I volunteer at a thrift shop and occasionally we get dehydrators. I will be on the look out for one so that I can try this.
My Grandmother grew up during the Depression,and her father was a drunk who kept losing jobs.She,along with her two sisters,her brother and their mother were poor. She had to eat cornflakes on a regular basis,and most of the time there was no milk. I think she said something about eating the cornflakes with water.
