How does a city lose 2,500 feet of tunnels under its streets?

North Miami Beach would like to know.

Over a four-year period, the city contracted with a construction company to build 254 manholes -- the tunnels that run down from street level to utility pipes 8 to 10 feet below.

Apropos of nothing, some of the videos made for great showings at Halloween.

Only a city official could be so stupid. The tunnels aren’t missing. The MONEY SPENT TO DIG THEM is missing. Stop looking for manholes. Start looking for bank accounts in the Caymans.

Usually there’s cable coming out of the manhole connected to the pipe.

Really? Then there’s no reason to proceed and probably best if everyone goes home. /s

If I had such a thing, and the city didn’t claim it, I’d shut up and hope the city would forget I even asked about it, and look into possible uses.

This sort of work was our family business worldwide for 30 years till my dad died.

Normally all your work is inspected by the engineer’s man (hired by city to design project) to sign on to billings you submit to the city for payment on a monthly basis.

And it is all very nicely blueprinted and I’m sure today computer located via GPS as well.

So either they lost all that or somebody got paid a lot of goodies to fake inspections for billings.

They might not have looked at every Manhole but they would know all the mapping and surface documentation and would have recorded that.

or it could have been paved over but usually that means raising manhole rims and they would not have paved over all of them.

this area used to be Accutero territory for the Luchesse family from NYC...but Tumac the daddy and the boys ratted on the family and all moved to Avery county North Carolina to live the life of mountain gangsters...which they do.

don’t know who plays there now

Ok, you got me curious. You made too much sense. Bootleggers were known in the nearby neighborhood way back when.

So, I wandered around until I found the manhole. It wasn’t easy since it was all grown over with weeds. I popped it off and then lowered a trouble light down.

About as disapointing as geraldo’s empty capone vault. The tunnel is more than half way filled with silt now...probably 2/3 full.

I aint going down there.

another 10-15 years and it’ll be solid dirt.

Put Barney Fwank on the case. He’s a professional at finding manholes.

That plan doesn't sound very good to me.
