WWL-TV in New Orleans has confirmed the Coast Guard is responding to a rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico.
Dozens are reported injured.
According to the Coast Guard, it happened 80 miles south of Grand Isle.
Rescue choppers from New Orleans and Houston are responding.
The injured will be taken to hospitals in various coastal areas from Houston to the Louisiana/Mississippi border area.
What exactly is a blowout? Could you define for the rest of us?
Willie the difference between you and me is that I don’t need to go to the Houston Chronicle, I’ve laid pipeline in that field (although it’s been a few years). It’s not 2,500’ deep. That is a fixed platform, probably no more than 5-600’ deep.
I wonder what happened with that Japanese ship that got hit ?with firecrackers? and caused a huge dent. With the hostage situation yesterday I think the eco-freaks are going into full blown attack mode.

Oil wells experience blowouts all the time. Texas alone had (I think) 14 or 15 in 2009.

Hurricane Ike was almost exactly two (2) years ago. If they were repairing damage for two years this may be just an accident from trying to re-start production. Most likely a gas explosion from some of the gas separation equipment. Not good, but certainly not Macondo.
