I am not sure when I first detected the noxious fumes that would envelop the conservative movement in the Obama era.
It might have been early on, in April 2009, when I visited a series of gun shows in rural California and Nevada.
Perusing tables piled high with high-caliber semi-automatic weapons and chatting with anyone in my vicinity, I heard urgent warnings of mass roundups, concentration camps, and a socialist government in Washington. These people that are purchasing these guns are people that are worried about whats going on in this country, a gun dealer told me outside a show in Reno. Good luck Obama, a young gun enthusiast remarked to me. We outnumber him 100 to 1. At this time, the Tea Party movement had not even registered on the national medias radar.
In September 2009, I led a panel discussion about this book inside an auditorium filled with nearly 100 students and faculty at the University of California-Riverside. Beside me sat Jonathan Walton, an African-American professor of religious studies and prolific writer, and Mark Takano, an erudite, openly gay former Democratic congressional candidate and local community college trustee.
In the middle of our discussion, a dozen College Republicans stormed the front of the stage with signs denouncing me as a left-wing hack while a hysterical young man leaped from the crowd, blowing kisses mockingly at Takano while heckling Walton as a racist. Afterward, university police officers insisted on escorting me to my ride after the right-wing heckler attempted to follow me as he shouted threats.

My encounter with this aggressive right-wing cadre seemed a strange, isolated event. But the hostility turned out to be symptomatic of the intensifying campaign to delegitimize President Obama and his allies in Congress. The Rights days of rage were only beginning.

You'll note how he HATES and despises tried and true DEMOCRAT and left-wing disruption tactics being used against HIM, but when his tyope use it against someone else it's "the People's Activism".
I just looked up his bio - he’s a 32 year old, liberal kid!
Nothing here....
Poor Max.
Their argument against conservativism has jumped the shark.
Ironically, the left loves guns ... but only when THEY have them all. 120+ Million dead and counting ... and that doesn’t include the babies they have killed.
Self righteous, self-loathing, loud, insulting, and wrong.
Fascism definition, government by the special interests.
PROJECTSHUN!!!
Nope...these are the people that got caught flat-footed. People that were worried about the future of the country already had their weapons.
The Left has been using this definition for many decades. For them, the term has no other meaning.
Knowledgeable people, on the other hand, understand that fascism is a form of socialism -- it is a brand of leftwing politics -- and it involves the ending of independent private property. Property may be owned by individuals and businesses, but may only be used within parameters established by the state.
"All within the state, nothing outside the state, nothing against the state." -- Benito Mussolini
Who is in charge right now and just who has implemented some really scary tracking of individual citizens and completely trashed rights in this country.
*Hint - It’s the democrats in POWER.
What’s interesting is that they seem to have no clue what fascism means.
I presume these are college educated jouranlists.
I see that he indicates that someone at a gun show talking in a paranoid manner about government round ups is automatically a Tea Party member - this is a common meme on the left as we approach elections in Nov.
I’ve noticed that desperate lefties have begun to whisper and hiss with louder urgency about ‘fascism’ on the right.
That’s it? That’s all they got? “Don’t vote for Republicans because they are gun worshipping fascists?” It’s not a new motto for the Left, they’ve worn it out by now. And they’ve worn out “Bush’s Fault!”. Among the left, isn’t there ANYONE who can pull together a constructive critique of Republicans. I mean, we on the right have some complaints about spineless rhino’s that could be repurposed for use by the left that would be FAR more persuasive then the old ‘bitter clingers’ and ‘jack booted fascists’ memes.
What dummies...Obama is driving us toward fascism. Glad to know where “Veterans Today” stands—and it’s apparently over in Seig Heil valley.
It’s interesting all these firsthand horror stories the lefties report hanging around gun shows, churches, tea parties etc.
Funny I’ve been around all those places for my whole life (64 years) & have never really seen much of the hatred, racism, nazism that they seem to easily encounter.
This guy Blumenthal is a professional radical left propagandist. He writes a column for Salon, publishes in the Daily Beast and The Nation. Nuff said.
‘In the middle of our discussion, a dozen College Republicans stormed the front of the stage with signs denouncing me as a left-wing hack’
Welcome to college “tolerance” and “civility”. I guess as a liberal, you’ve never experienced it before.
I could laugh at your recounting them being “a dozen”. Try hundreds of liberal losers heckling you and throwing things.
Of course, also laugh because those dozen are probably the ONLY College Republicans on that campus. 100% participation.
Yep. Nice play on words, too.
And remember who his daddy is - 'Sid Viscious' Blumenthal, from the Clinton gang.
