Melbourne, Aug 26 (ANI): Astronomers are predicting that a massive solar storm, much bigger in potential than the one that caused spectacular light shows on Earth earlier this month, is to strike our planet in 2012 with a force of 100 million hydrogen bombs.
Several US media outlets have reported that NASA was warning the massive flare this month was just a precursor to a massive solar storm building that had the potential to wipe out the entire planet's power grid.
Despite its rebuttal, NASA's been watching out for this storm since 2006 and reports from the US this week claim the storms could hit on that most Hollywood of disaster dates - 2012.
Similar storms back in 1859 and 1921 caused worldwide chaos, wiping out telegraph wires on a massive scale. The 2012 storm has the potential to be even more disruptive.
"The general consensus among general astronomers (and certainly solar astronomers) is that this coming Solar maximum (2012 but possibly later into 2013) will be the most violent in 100 years," News.com.au quoted astronomy lecturer and columnist Dave Reneke as saying.
"A bold statement and one taken seriously by those it will affect most, namely airline companies, communications companies and anyone working with modern GPS systems.

Can’t you pay online? Then there’d be a record of the date of transfer. If I had to mail a check, after what happened to you, I think I’d pay the extra to get them to have to sign for it on delivery.
This will not turn out well.....I already know the ending......
I’m teaching my wife how to do it now. She prefers a paper trail and is not computer savvy but is seeing how fast and easy it is. I had to spend three whole months listening to her b*tch when the bank stopped sending back our canceled checks a while back.
In fact this ties in nicely to the story because she is sure the day she starts paying everything on line the internet will up and break on her...
What other cultures? All I've heard about is the Mayans.
And let's say you come up with these other cultures and it reconciles it. . . It would be rather interesting.
So, let's explore this a bit.
I’ve got the solution!! Pollute the @#!& out of our planet, and the atmosphere would be so thick, the flare would just bounce off. Eh? Eh?
Was that the one that ripped all the telegraph lines down? Or was there another in the late nineteenth century?
This is hugh and series! Should we try to remain clam or should we all scarmable?
I’m remaining clam.
Baryy, however, is scarmabling up lobsters.
Really? Did you know a moose bit my sister while she was eating cheese?
Hot dog! 6M will be wide open - WAS possible?
re:2012
From what I understand, the Earth’s magnetosphere is going to fail.
CA....
How could I know, I was in the shower.
I’ve taken to printing out my monthly online bank info. There’s a check icon I can click which gives me a full-sized pic of any checks. I print those out too.
Me thinks it’s time to start a new Bomb Shelter company.
This is not to be scoffed at!
I have been studying this for a couple of years now.
(excuse if this has been covered by someone else)
The sun goes through a activity cycle of 12-14 years on average. We just started back on the upswing after a very quiet down side. The predicted peak will be 2012-2014.
The 1859 Carrington event damaged telegraph offices, lines, equipment, etc. If it happened TODAY it would devastate our infrastructure. Scientist know that it WILL happen like that or worse SOMETIME. Whether it will be this cycle or not I don’t think we can know.

will keep us posted. We had a CME a couple of weeks ago and we got plenty of warning, about 24 hours, before it hit the earth. It caused northern lights as far south as Michigan.
This is not a hoax, although it’s about like predicting weather.
The WORST CASE would be that we would be knocked back to medieval days..........really!
It would be similar to an EMP strike (One Second After is a good scenario)
Oh, and another thing, Congress just turned down a few million dollars that would have prepared us for this thing.
dah-dah-dah dit-dit-dah-dit dah-dit-dah-dit dah-dah-dah dit-dit-dah dit-dah-dit dit-dit-dit dit
(of course)
And the only prescription is more cowbell.
O.K. So what is your source?
I know one thing. Not one weatherman can tell me if it will rain tomorrow. Not one.
But some fool is going to tell me what will happen in 2012?
I wasn’t talking about HAM operators.
