Ken Mehlman, President Bush's campaign manager in 2004 and a former chairman of the Republican National Committee, has told family and associates that he is gay.
Mehlman arrived at this conclusion about his identity fairly recently, he said in an interview. He agreed to answer a reporter's questions, he said, because, now in private life, he wants to become an advocate for gay marriage and anticipated that questions would arise about his participation in a late-September fundraiser for the American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER), the group that supported the legal challenge to California's ballot initiative against gay marriage, Proposition 8.
"It's taken me 43 years to get comfortable with this part of my life," said Mehlman, now an executive vice-president with the New York City-based private equity firm, KKR. "Everybody has their own path to travel, their own journey, and for me, over the past few months, I've told my family, friends, former colleagues, and current colleagues, and they've been wonderful and supportive. The process has been something that's made me a happier and better person. It's something I wish I had done years ago."
Privately, in off-the-record conversations with this reporter over the years, Mehlman voiced support for civil unions and told of how, in private discussions with senior Republican officials, he beat back efforts to attack same-sex marriage. He insisted, too, that President Bush "was no homophobe." He often wondered why gay voters never formed common cause with Republican opponents of Islamic jihad, which he called "the greatest anti-gay force in the world right now."

I’m shocked! /sarc
Half the jourbalists on the Eastern Seaboard: “Yeah, so are we.”
Some how I find that a little difficult to believe.
Ken Mehlman thinks Marc Ambinder is gaY?
Wow, glad they devoted the time and energy to get this relevant news out to the public. I feel better informed for it. It surely means that the Dow will jump 1.5% on this extremely important news. /sarc
At least he has the decency to have NOT left a humiliated wife, or confused children, in his wake. I give him credit for that.
Uh...a little slow, aren’t you, Mel? Guess you want to find a guy to settle down with now.
George Bush really made a lot of bad mistakes in hiring.
I think a lot of us arrived at that conclusion years ago.
I must confess that I am gay
but in a different sort of way
The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
This guy is much better at the job than Mike Steele.
"We will resist the efforts of some to obtain government endorsement of homosexuality." -- Ronald Reagan, July 12, 1984.

dittos !
I agree—that “fairly recently” is a surprise. He’s an adult man, not some 16 year old still trying to figure things out. You can now be sure that every time the GOP takes a position that is not in lock step with the Gay Left, the MSM will beat a path to Mehlman’s door.
When will Michael Steele make an announcement?
How about a Trifecta..Muslim ,Gay, and Democrat.Nothing would surprise me.
The RNC elected this big homo to the Chair position and the 2006 takeover of Congress by socialists was the result.
Now he is "out", well goody goody for him.
Well he ought to do us all another favor and drive a school bus full of homosexual lawyers over a cliff, and make sure there are no empty seats.
And take the entire RNC with him.
Joseph Farah warned us about this rot last week: “Meanwhile, the oldest and most prestigious ‘conservative’ weekly in the nation is owned by a corporation run by an activist homosexual.”
Farah was referring to Jeffrey Carneal, the President of Eagle Publishing (which owns both ‘Human Events’ and Regnery). It is starting to boggle my mind how many homosexual males are in charge of Conservative media. It never fails that their agenda for special rights eventually comes out. It make take a few years, but these perverts always choose their bedroom lifestyle as the utmost priority in their lives. I find that very corrupting to what wholesome values should really be about.
