The Department of Defense announced today the death of a Marine who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
Cpl. Christopher J. Boyd, 22, of Palatine, Ill., died Aug. 19 while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, IMarine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.

He previously deployed with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit to the Indian Ocean in 2009, returning last April. He volunteered for this combat mission, while shipboard, before even finishing his last deployment, even though he was due a 14 month dwell time stateside. After only a month at home, he deployed for this special mission and was on his last combat patrol. He died on patrol after stepping on an IED in the Marjah area.
His personal service awards include the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.
