Plant growth declines as warming causes drought (actual AP headline)
Associated Press ^ | August 20, 2010 | RANDOLPH E. SCHMID

Plant growth that had been spurred by global warming has reversed, despite temperatures that continue to rise.

Researchers say the change could affect food security and development of biofuels.

The amount of carbon taken up by growing plants increased from 1982 through 1999 as temperatures rose and the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increased.

But a new study in Friday's edition of the journal Science found a drought-related decline in such plant growth from 2000 to 2009, even though temperatures continued to climb.

As drought caused by warming reduces the land's ability to take up carbon, the result could be more carbon dioxide left in the atmosphere, and thus more warming, Maosheng Zhao of the University of Montana explained in a telephone interview.

"This is a pretty serious warning that warmer temperatures are not going to endlessly improve plant growth," co-author Steven W. Running, also of the University of Montana, said in a statement.

"We see this as a bit of a surprise, and potentially significant on a policy level because previous interpretations suggested global warming might actually help plant growth around the world," he said.

Instead, he and Zhao found a small but measurable decline of about 1 percent, compared to a 6 percent increase in the 1980s and '90s.

Their study, based on data collected by NASA satellites, found that northerly areas continued to increase plant growth, thanks to warmer temperatures and

Are these people the only fools on earth who still cling onto this global warming fraud? Everyone else in the world seems to pretty much know it was disclosed as a phony ‘science’.

Bunch of voodoo witch doctor crap...

So those warm nights in Iowa are actually harmful to corn growth. Could of fooled me. That’s the only time you can here the corn grow. They may fool some city folk and school children out collecting garbage for recycling, but a country hick will make idiots out of this group of scientists.

Isn’t NOAH one of the Nasa satellites? Wasn’t it just proven to have been giving garbage data...like having the temperature of the Great Lakes at 400 degrees or some such?

The truth is that ample CO2 actually enables plants to withstand drought conditions.

These people have gone into the "making stuff up out of the clear blue: phase.

Global warming does not cause droughts.

ice ages cause droughts, locking up all the water in massive ice caps.

during the last ice age, ca. 20,000 b.c., all continents were severly droughted, if I can use that as a verb.

I can’t get this through my friends’ heads.

Can I impose to suggest "rainless," if you ever run into the same problem again?

It’s all about “policy making” as the professor from U of Montana states - the Left has taken over Montana - too bad as it used to be a place where tough independent people lived. Or was that just hype?

Well the bishops and priests of “man-made” “global warming” need to either make up their minds, or realize they can’t keep speaking out of both sides of their mouths; the people are not as ignorant as the bishops and priests of the AGW religion think they are.

In an earlier report this week, we were told that “global warming” was causing greater precipitation.

So which is it - drought, greater precip, drought, greater precip, drought, greater precip - I guess it depends on which climate “crisis” of the moment they don’t want to “let go to waste”.

Flim-Flam. Science has long since discredited itself by succumbing to advocacy journalism, much the same as the once respectable Scientific American, which is now virtually a leftwing tabloid.
