Long before President Obama waded into the vociferous debate over a mosque near Ground Zero, a group of conservative writers and bloggers critical of Islam had seized on the issue and helped transform it into a national political spectacle.
While some have dismissed them as bigoted attention-seekers, their attacks on the proposed Islamic center in Lower Manhattan have gained currency in recent weeks among some Republican leaders. And their influence appears to be growing.
They are organizing a Sept. 11 rally against the mosque that will feature former U.S. House speaker Newt Gingrich. They advise the FBI and other government security agencies on the threats posed by Islamic radicalism, headline "tea party" events and attract millions of readers concerned or curious about Islam to Web sites with names such as Jihad Watch, Creeping Sharia and Stop Islamization of America.
"People on the Hill, their staff read these sites, they show their bosses. . . . They push these subjects into the spotlight, often at a time when major media isn't doing that," said Cliff May, a columnist and former spokesman for the Republican National Committee who runs a think tank focused on religious extremism and religious freedom.
The most colorful -- and perhaps most visible -- activist at the moment is Pam Geller, a former New York Observer publisher who has appeared in a bikini and a super-tight Superman costume challenging Islam.
Through her blog, Atlas Shrugs, television interviews and appearances at political rallies, Geller has become one of the chief organizers of opposition to the so-called Ground Zero mosque as well as efforts to build other Muslim prayer centers across the country.(continued)

Newt leading this protest tell me he wants to be President. There is no uproar in media other than Scarborough and some left-wingers, no one is calling his stance bigoted or attacking him for being an extremist. Newt has also agreed to Climate-Change politics and Cap-N-Trade.
Bankers need chaos in streets to get people’s focus away from them. Maybe Newt has agreed to deliver. Usually media would be all over him for uttering a single non-PC line. Their silence indicates, Elites have picked a new President, and we are close to CHAOS phase of NWO.
You heard it here first: Newt will be the next President.
Hopefully, this Mosque thing would fade and he wins based on ideals he used to spouse. If his Presidential campaign is entirely driven by this sort of rhetoric, railing against just one group, holding ALL of the accountable for crimes committed by some who belong to same religion, then we are close to something really terrible in this land. Let’s hope its not the case.
It kind of reads like a plea for ‘Net Neutrality’ before it’s ‘too late’. By that I mean the left has routinely suggested that FOX and Drudge were the only things standing in their way of lifting America to the Utopian plane. Now that bloggers are being more widely read and responded to - the left ‘has’ to claim that the right’s blogosphere is contaminating people and ‘making them vote against their best interests’ etc. Since they can’t pull Obama off the stage in time (nor Nancy nor Harry etc.) I believe they will be even more desperate in their attempts to silence bloggers etc. and this article seems to be saying ‘see how the right unfairly influences public discourse’?
I think it’s both whine and beg - ‘please make the right blogosphere STOP!’
I picture them sitting in their conclaves, mouths agape at the reality that their mouthpiece MSM is not the only voice out there anymore as November approaches. The MSM carried them to their current positions before -this is the first election without an MSM guarantee of containment.
If the lefties were smart (OH thank heavens they aren’t!) they would stop talking. Obama is his worst enemy but he just won’t stop talking and that is great for us; let the whole world see what he is so we don’t have to keep telling them ourselves.
That may well be the big ‘message’ that Dems take away from their experience playing at totalitarian politics -

I sometimes wonder how this whole thing would be playing out right now if there was no internet and the right was still contained by the MSM. I can’t even picture it very well because the difference would be so extreme.

I like the way u think but i disagree w/ some of your conclusions. OK we MUST get rid of the Central Bank to bring back the free market but I don’t think theres a conspiracy by bankers to start a new world order just enhance their power.

The reason the building of the 9/11 Mosque is not approved by the great majority of Americans has nothing to do with these bloggers however, they just helped put this in the public arena. Something the MSM would never do - no wonder they are becoming irrelevant.
I know some repubicans are saying we shouldn’t push this hard, we should concentrate on the economy. But the economy will improve over time, maybe as we approach 2012. Now Obama will always be seen as a muslim apologist with little connection with or feeling for the great majority of Americans he was elected to represent. I suspect this will hurt him considerably in the polls for as long as he is president.
No wonder the libs are spinning furiously in damage control.

You gotta love these liberals. They can’t stop writing about this and the more they do, the farther they fall.
The mosque issue will not go away because it is a very bad idea. The damage it is causing the Left will not go away because it reminds everyone that it is liberals who don’t like America and refuse to admit there are boundaries and limits in this world.
