President Barack Obama used the anniversary of Social Security to trumpet Democrats' support for the popular program and accuse Republicans of trying to destroy it.
Seventy-five years after President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Social Security into law, Obama said in his weekly radio and Internet address Saturday: "We have an obligation to keep that promise, to safeguard Social Security for our seniors, people with disabilities and all Americans today, tomorrow and forever."
Some Republican leaders in Congress are "pushing to make privatizing Social Security a key part of their legislative agenda if they win a majority in Congress this fall," Obama said.
He contended that such privatization was "an ill-conceived idea that would add trillions of dollars to our budget deficit while tying your benefits to the whims of Wall Street traders and the ups and downs of the stock market."

You know...I think seniors are paying attention. They know what Obamacare will do to them.
I don’t see this working anymore.
BTW, I’m “almost” a senior, though I won’t ever reach that age. I’m going to be young forever. ;o)
“The co-chairmen of President Obamas debt and deficit commission, Erskine Bowles and Alan Simpson, recently warned that our countrys current fiscal path - primarily the cost of entitlements - unless reversed, will destroy the country from within.
Really...do you trust those two?
I don’t...but they are right about this.
Watch these clowns try to impose “means testing” on Social Security- effectively turning it into a welfare program.
Social Security Cards up until the 1980s expressly stated the number and card were not to be used for identification purposes. Since nearly everyone in the United States now has a number, it became convenient to use it anyway and the message, NOT FOR IDENTIFICATION, was removed.
Franklin Roosevelt, a Democrat, introduced the Social
Security (FICA) Program. He promised:
1.) That participation in the Program would be
Completely voluntary,
No longer Voluntary
2.) That the participants would only have to pay
1% of the first $1,400 of their annual
Incomes into the Program,
Now 7.65%
on the first $90,000
3.) That the money the participants elected to put
into the Program would be deductible from
their income for tax purposes each year,
No longer tax deductible
4.) That the money the participants put into the
independent ‘Trust Fund’ rather than into the
general operating fund, and therefore, would
only be used to fund the Social Security
Retirement Program, and no other
Government program, and,
Under Johnson the money was moved to
The General Fund and Spent
5.) That the annuity payments to the retirees would never be taxed as income.
Under Clinton & Gore
Up to 85% of your Social Security can be Taxed
Since many of us have paid into FICA for years and are
now receiving a Social Security check every month —
and then finding that we are getting taxed on 85% of
the money we paid to the Federal government to ‘put
away’ — you may be interested in the following:
Q: Which Political Party took Social Security from the
independent ‘Trust Fund’ and put it into the
general fund so that Congress could spend it?
A: It was Lyndon Johnson and the democratically
controlled House and Senate.
Q: Which Political Party eliminated the income tax
deduction for Social Security (FICA) withholding?
A: The Democratic Party.
Q: Which Political Party started taxing Social
Security annuities?
A: The Democratic Party, with Al Gore casting the
‘tie-breaking’ deciding vote as President of the
Senate, while he was Vice President of the US
Q: Which Political Party decided to start
giving annuity payments to immigrants?
A: That’s right!
Jimmy Carter and the Democratic Party.
Immigrants moved into this country, and at age 65,
began to receive Social Security payments! The
Democratic Party gave these payments to them,
even though they never paid a dime into it!
Then, after violating the original contract (FICA),
the Democrats turn around and tell you that the Republicans want to take your Social Security away!
And the worst part about it is uninformed citizens believe it!
At which point, the manure shall hit the ventilator and (cursed be his name) things will get a bit tense in the ol' USA!
Historically speaking that is not what happens. The goverment doubles down on their errors, crushes the few remaining Producers, and when that fails distracts the masses by going to war.
Rulers don't want the serfs going primal, that is, doing desperate things when hunger strikes. The growing Entitlement Class has a large feral segment that doesn't need that much encouragement to go fullscale do-it-yourself Predator. So what SS, unemployment and a host of other wealth transfer schemes do after the votes have been bought is to keep the monopoly on predation and violence.
This is why unemployment compensation will be extended forever, and why the kakistocracy will invent one scheme after another to keep people from hitting the streets to support whatever primal need isn't being filled adequately.
What I wish was truly true is if it was: Obama: GOP trying to destroy Socialism
Oh I wish...
You're talkin' about College Park, aincha?
Why is China willing to continually lend the liberal, wannabe socialist Democrat American Congress money?
The destruction of America’s economic and military superpower status through bankruptcy is much less costly and messy than a global war.
Just give the American Democrat Congress the money to spend the nation into destruction and it will happen.
I agree but I believe he is creating another "faux-crisis" to get at our 401K money for tax purposes.
I haven’t been there for 35 years, so I wouldn’t know;-)
I know Towson State university north of Baltimore City has had lots of crime problems. It is primarily female too, lots of human resource degrees.
I understand Montgomery County has been trashed by illegals. The last time I was there was 1972, and my relatives lived in Silver Spring, Rockville, and Chevy Chase. One other in Alexandria VA.
