These quotes are from his purported speech to the Independent Order of Pole-Bearers in Memphis not long before his death.

I would be happy to agree that such sentiments are laudable in the General.

Sadly, I have not yet been shown contemporary evidence he actually made such a speech. If you have any, I’d be glad to see it.

Have you actually ever read Varina Davis' book? I have. Have you ever read any other biography of either Davis? Cooper's book on Davis? Or Cashin's book on Varina? Of course not, that would be too much work. I've actually read them all, as well as Chesnut's diary and a lot of Jefferson Davis' history of the confederacy (A more boring book was never written IMHO). In some of them - Cooper's and Davis' books - Limber is never mentioned. In the rest Limber is mentioned in passing, something between an "awww, ain't that cute" and a "what on earth were they thinking" kind of thing. But all accounts agree on one thing - there was no adoption. Varina Davis never refers to him as an adopted son, or any kind of relation. Limber was apparently allowed to stay as a plaything for the younger Davis children. He was not particularly valued, any more than any other family servant was valued. I've never seen any confirmation that he left Richmond with the Davis' or that either Davis took any particular pains to find out what happened to him. Your 'adopted child' claims are a figment of your simple Southron imagination, and yet another instance of a Lost Cause myth without basis in fact.

I'm the one leaving it out? The claim was made that Limber was Davis' adopted son. I've pointed out that the claim is nonsense, and you've provided support that backs my position. I suppose I should thank you for it, but your supporting my position was accidental at best and sloppiness on your part at worst.

And that is based on what source? I've seen versions of the story that have Limber ripped from Varina's loving bosom when the Yankees marched into Richmond. But Lost Causers have never let accuracy stand in the way of a good Southron myth.

Reason is not something we often see in one of your posts. And evidence that Davis had any interest in Limber once his usefulness was over is as just as nonexistent. But again, it makes for such a nice fairy tale to say he spent the post war years searching high and low for the little tyke.

I lived there and I will say you are correct.

Boston is without a doubt the most racist city in this country, not only racist but also bigoted to any one who are different to them come from not where they come from or heritage.

Obviously the south isn't much of a backbone if it went belly up like they did. But if we're comparing the South to body parts, I've got a certain orifice in mind which is a far more apt comparison.

“Nathan Bedford Forrest: A Biography,” Jack Hurst, Chapter 33, Pg. 361 - “The rural west Tennessee town of Trenton saw racial trouble in 1874. Two white men made themselves uninvited guests at a barbecue hosted by black residents. The host were insulted when the two men refused to pay for their dinner. It appears the two white men were fired on by the angry crowd. Sixteen of the barbequers were arrested by the Sheriff of Trenton. The posse had to defend itself from two attacks by groups of masked whites. At approximately 1:00 am, a group of masked men took the black citizens from the jail. They killed six on the edge of town. The others were never seen again. Forrest’s response to this incident was typical of the man and the attitudes he held throughout his life: ‘If I were entrusted with the proper authority I would capture and exterminate the white marauders who disgraced their race by this cowardly murder of Negroes.’”

Memphis Daily Avalanche, July 6, 1875

“July 4, 1875 – Memphis, Tennessee -

Nathan Bedford Forrest was invited to speak by the Jubilee of Pole Bearers, a political and social organization in the post-war era comprised of Black Southerners. Miss Lou Lewis was introduced to General Forrest then presented him with a bouquet of flowers and said: ‘Mr. Forrest – allow me to present you this bouquet as a token, of reconciliation, an offering of peace and good will.’

General Forrest received the flowers with a bow, and replied:

‘Miss Lewis, ladies and gentlemen – I accept these flowers as a token of reconciliation between the white and colored races of the South. I accept them more particularly, since they come from a colored lady, for if there is any one on God’s great earth who loves the ladies, it is myself.

This is a proud day for me. Having occupied the position I have for thirteen years, and being misunderstood by the colored race, I take this occasion to say that I am your friend. I am here as the representative of the Southern people – one that has been more maligned than any other.

I assure you that every man who was in the Confederate army is your friend. We were born on the same soil, breathe the same air, live in the same land, and why should we not be brothers and sisters.

When the war broke out I believed it to be my duty to fight for my country, and I did so. I came here with the jeers and sneers of a few white people, who did not think it right. I think it is right, and will do all I can to bring about harmony, peace and unity. I want to elevate every man, and to see you take your places in your shops, stores and offices.

I don’t propose to say anything about politics, but I want you to do as I do – go to the polls and select the best men to vote for. I feel that you are free men, I am a free man, and we can do as we please. I came here as a friend and whenever I can serve any of you I will do so.
