FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (Illegal to grow your own food)

Posted on 08/07/2010 6:47:50 PM PDT by Scythian

This bill was considered in committee which has recommended it be considered by the Senate as a whole. Although it has been placed on a calendar of business, the order in which legislation is considered and voted on is determined by the majority party leadership. Keep in mind that sometimes the text of one bill is incorporated into another bill, and in those cases the original bill, as it would appear here, would seem to be abandoned.

The part that says you can’t plant ‘patented’ material without having paid the patent holder their duly collected fee.

So you can still grow your own food. Thanks.

I will, at that point, be forced to buy new seeds.

There you go again, admitting you'll be buying seed to plant and grow your own food.

People are either for freedom, or for tyranny, despotism, and enslavement. There is NO middle ground.

Actually there is a middle ground. There are those people who don't think anyone is really good or that anyone is really bad. That government would never try to exert total authority over the people. That nothing like that could ever happen here. Lukewarm people. People with no sense of discernment who can't find a reason to take either side.

Oh, you mean the same “free traders” who ignore the fact that our entire Federal government is supposed to be operated on duties and tariffs on goods imported and sold, and not our livelihood or earnings? That kind of “free trader”?

“Let me know when they make it illegal for me to plant my tomatoes.”

Let me know when they narrow commercial agribusiness down to ‘tomatoes’.

Try feeding that to cows. Or chickens. Or, better still, formulate breakfast cereals out of tomatoes.

Because we all know grains are overrated for both human and animal consumption. Correctamundo?

Hint: Monsanto doesn’t really give a rats ass about your tomatoes. Tomatoes are a small fraction of the agribusiness market.

Corn and other grains on the other hand...Well, that’s a whole new ballgame. And how we go about feeding six billion human souls on this planet and the animals they eat.

We're changing the subject now from growing your own food to commercial agribusiness?

Its really time to stop granting tax exemptions for these non-governmental corporations.

They really are an arm of (socialist)government and no free society should be forced to subsidize by tax exemption, their efforts to destroy Constitutional government and individual rights.

As soon as we shrink the government down to the size that can be supported by duties and tariffs, I’ll get on board.

Touche’. But those are people who I would say have already abdicated their freedom in their complacency, and are, de facto, for self imposed slavery, the enablers, as it were—those who have already lost the battle. You know the expression (I forget it exactly) about trading the liberty for security...

But I do most certainly get your meaning, and concede that not everyone is active on one side or another. They just become the hurdles to everyone else, it seems, pawns to be used by those who would use them. Excellent “Lukewarm” reference, by the way.

Our corporations that are subject to the highest corporate taxes in the world? Yeah, we need to raise rates even higher, that's a good way to bring back production to the US.

“Let me know when they make it illegal for me to plant my tomatoes.”

In much the same way you can (at this point in time) drive a car while having an out of date sticker or license. You *can*, just don’t get caught.

But you’re always looking over your shoulder for the cop car pulled up behind you at the stop light. Kind of like seatbelt laws. Initially only added on IF you were cited for something else. Now they’re being used to initiate police intervention.

No way to live. Or garden.

“There you go again, admitting you’ll be buying seed to plant and grow your own food.”

Buying seed I formerly used from last year. Meaning givning my $$$ to someone else for something that heretofore was *free* to me. Something *I* saved and produced. My food is only ‘allowed’ if I have their ‘permit’ for it.

I’ve never bought flint corn seed. My seed was a gift from my grandmother. I’ve saved seed and grown it out each year since then. I’m not entirely sure my grandmother ever bought that particular seed strain. I think one of her uncles gave her seed corn back in the 50s’s.

Why can’t I just continue to grow my grandmother’s seed? Why do you want to prevent me from planting my grandmother’s corn seed?

Which is the whole disucssion of this thread. Food will essentially be required to have a ‘permit’.

When, in the course of the history of this country, has it ever been required to have a ‘permit’ to grow or possess food?

“Its really time to stop granting tax exemptions for these non-governmental corporations.”

Agreed. I’m for a consumption based tax, and no subsidies. That way, boycotts really get things moving!

“We’re changing the subject now from growing your own food to commercial agribusiness?”

When agribusiness is writing the laws. Yes.

If you really think they care about *tomato* seeds you’re silly and foolish.

Try going a single day without eating corn, or something (animal) that has eaten corn.

Now, imagine 6 billion people living like that.

Starvation anyone?

JDW11235 thinks the government will plant the GMOs to surround your house. See post #61

Monsanto has already done that and sued the landowners for saving seed from their own crops.

You must have me confused with someone else.

Food will essentially be required to have a ‘permit’.

You mean the food you'll still be able to grow? Sounds like you're on the wrong thread. This is "the government made it illegal to grow your own food" thread.
