(CNSNews.com) - Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said that Jesuss Golden Rule inspired him to vote to confirm Elena Kagan to the U.S. Supreme Court and suggested it would be a good thing for his Senate colleagues to also ponder Jesuss words as they prepared to vote on Kagan.
It is divine in its orientation, and it is probably something that would serve us all well if we thought about it at moments such as this, Sen. Graham said on the Senate floor, as he pointed his colleagues to the Golden Rule and counseled them to look to the wisdom of somebody far wiser than I am as they cast their votes on Kagan.
As an associate counsel in the Clinton White House, Kagan was an architect of the legal and political strategy that President Bill Clinton used in vetoing the ban on partial-birth abortion. Her nomination by President Barack Obama in May was instantly endorsed by Planned Parenthood, one of the nations leading advocates of legalized abortion.
In casting his vote for Kagan, Sen. Graham said he expected her to follow a voting pattern similar to Justice John Paul Stevens whom she will replace. In his more than three decades on the court, Justice Stevens persistently backed the position that there is a constitutional right to abortion.
But at the end of the day, those of us in the Senate have to understand that every branch of government includes human beings and there is a rule that stood the test of time, said Sen. Graham in an August 3 Senate floor speech. I didn't make this one up. It was somebody far wiser than I am, somebody far more gifted than I ever hope to be, somebody I put a lot of trust in.
It is called the Golden Rule, said Graham. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. That is probably one of the most powerful statements ever made. It is divine in its orientation, and it is probably something that would serve us all well if we thought about it at moments such as this. "
Graham also said Kagan meets the test the Framers envisioned for a Supreme Court Justice.
I am going to vote for Elena Kagan because I believe constitutionally she meets the test the Framers envisioned for someone to serve on the Court, said Graham. I don't think the Framers ever envisioned Lindsey Graham from South Carolina voting no because President Obama picked someone who is clearly different than I would have chosen.
Sen. Graham was one of only five Republicans to vote to confirm Kagan to the Supreme Court. The other four were Senators Susan Collins of Maine, Judd Gregg of New Hampshire, Richard Lugar of Indiana, and Olympia Snowe of Maine. The Senate confirmed Kagan, 63-37, on Thursday, Aug. 5. Sen. Ben Nelson of Nebraska was the only Democrat who voted against the confirmation of Kagan.
The Golden Rule is found in the Gospels of Mark and Luke. In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus says during the Sermon on the Mount: Do to others as you would have them do to you.
Nah, I think even Jesus thinks he’s a jerk.
Graham doesn’t have a clue.
The dems would never give an inch to any conservative.
And yet these RINOs pack the court with commie fascists.
It’s worse than despicable.
That is why not only all democrats have to go in November but also all RINOs like Graham and the two in Maine, Collins and the other one whose name I cant remember right now but both must go as well.
These kumbaya RINOs are helping destroy the country along with all the commie democrats.
Can you imagine what is in his FBI files?
That’s an easy standard, cuz I wouldn’t vote for Lindsey to be on the Supreme Court either.
What a jerk!
He has just reaped the whirlwind!
The excuses these guys are trotting out these days are laughable. The sad part is they think they are getting away with it.
And for the most part they are.
They oughta be tarred and feathered. Thats what people used to do to scoundrels.
It will take a long time to turn this ship around. If it does not sink first.
Meanwhile, we here in California will work on getting rid of B[eat] Boxer.
I’ve had it with this clown. We need to start playing like the Dems do with their members- cut off fundraising dollars for those who stray from the party line; dig up dirt on your own difficult people to keep them in check, block people from future favored committees over votes...
If Light-loafers Lindsay used “the Golden Rule” as his standard for choosing USSC justices, it’s good thing obama didn’t nominate Calypso Louie Farrakhan!
What a steaming pile of misplaced rectitude...
Olympia Snowe
You're a useful idiot, lindsey graham.
Graham is about to become the first Republican given immunity by the press for claiming that Jesus told him to do something - in this case, Jesus apparently told Lindsey Graham to vote for Elena Kagan.
Jesus was once compelled to answer religious leaders at his trial when he was charged under Oath to do so. That is how important an oath to God was to Jesus - He answered the question He had previously refused to answer, to people he felt no need to obey. It was that important.
Elena Kagan will soon take an Oath to God (and Country) to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America. She will then do the exact opposite for her entire tenure. With full knowledge of this, Graham claims that confirming her is what Jesus wants him to do.
I don't think Lindsey has Biblical Authority in his corner on this one.
he must be refering to a different Jesus than the one I know.
Politicians are running out of pleasing ideas for the big lie that democracy is.
How is it the fine voters of South Carolina can send such an inept, twinkie-toed, liberal-leaning lover RINO to the US Senate is beyond me? And to elect an excellent man in Sen DeMint at the same time?
“Linsey I am sure Jesus and the framers wanted someone who supports murdering unborn children in the womb.”
Partial-birth abort others as you would have them partial-birth abort you.
“And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” Matthew 25:40
Linsay sanctioned a person that sanctions the murder of the innocent unborn. By his vote is is damned
Freepers in his state, please give this moron a call and ask him if he’s off his meds again?
