Mod note:

AP changed the title:

BP, feds clash over reopening capped Gulf oil well

--------------------------------------

Both could be signs there are leaks in the well that's been capped off for three days.

The official spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Sunday because an announcement about the next steps had not been made yet.

“I thought that too, but I put have been checking on DU and I think they want it to stop because of the wildlife. That was my impression of the majority of poster there.”

And they are already onboard with cap and trade anyway. They aren’t worried about convincing the other side. They know better. Every big thing this administration does is against the will of the majority of the country anyway.

It’s no secret Bloomberg had the story earlier today. Can’t post Bloomberg articles on FR.

Amazing. I do NOT think that the Thad’s “seep” is newly discovered. It’s been my contention and belief for months now that BP (and the Govt.) have known since at least June 5th that there is a vent “some distance” from the well site.

That capping the well was a “test” should, thus, be no surprise. Nor should Adm. Allen maintaining that the test would end and “production” resume — because he knew that there was a leak and it was only a question of how much (more) it would flow if the well was capped. I think Thad, by publicly declaring that a seep has been “detected” (note: he didn’t say when it was detected) is calling BP’s bluff (or gamble) that shutting the well head will make everything OK, politically, until the relief well(s) execute a successful bottom kill. BP is/was betting that the government has enough reasons to keep existence of said seep from public view.

How far away is Thad’s seep? Dunno, but I’ll bet that the one that truly matters is about 1.8 miles SSW of the Macondo 252-A site, at a depth of approximately 5770 feet. Because that’s where ROV boats like Viking Poseidon and Ocean Intervention were going in early June.

Well, I’m going to take my uneducated guess right here so Mark it down.

There wont be a huge gas explosion.
There wont be a huge catastrophic oil gush caused by implosion of the oil reserve/seabed etc etc.

But there will be much “Apocalypto” muttering.

I can honestly say this wit no bias .

obama has been the most lazist president this country has had in my life.
Obama has shown utterly no leadership what so ever right up there with Carter.
Obama’s picks for his admin has been the most radical I have ever seen.
Obama has been the most arrogant president I have ever known in history.
Obama has got a following by the media and many of his voters that of a cult.

He seems to have no clue what he’s doing, no leadership, is so arrogant is it amazing, seems to think that he is president of his voters and not the country.

I honestly find it amazing how this man got president but then I remind myself as to how he got here.

The media have acted like groupies and like a cult so much so that I’m embarrassed for them and yet they still cannot see it.

black racism, communists, socialists, mass murdering admirers like those who love Mao in his admin. No clue what to do when we have been attacked a few times under his watch, his ignorance to our allies and Islam, the law.
sue those who endorse a fed law but ignore those who ignore the fed law/ where is the coverage and photo’
s of the oil spill lately, why the black out by this groupie media?

The list is endless, it sickens me

Yes, get the pressure down by removing the oil. BP needs all it can get to pay off claims, and start paying dividends again to the the millions of small, retired stockholders who need to supplement their Social Security, like me.

All profits from the Macondo have been signed away to some enviro group. Sorry.

I find it awfully suspicious that at the exact same time that Cheney is in the hospital getting heart surgery that the leak in the Gulf starts up again.

Also - I think a case can be made about BP’s racism.

I suggest BP wants to salvage the well and produce it. The feds - in close alliance with the environmentalist whackos - want to shut it in, along with the rest of the wells in the Gulf.

They’ve never been shy about their goals.

Not in line with green-technology. The whole point of this
“project” is to end off-shore (i.e. American) oil sources right after saying We’re For Drilling. Brilliant Psychopathy. For two more years. Oh, and buy a bike and invest in windmills. And move downtown.

Listen to Gerald Celente Talking About Air Quality in the Gulf .

He nails the Obama administration for lying, misleading the public and covering up. People are fleeing inland by the hundreds now. Soon thousands will be running away from the region. Air quality is being damaged all over the region. Soon it will spread inland to the Midwest. This is the new 'Dust Bowl' people. Except that the 1930's original did not kill stragglers by means of poison toxins like benzine (reading are 3,000 times above permissible levels).

“Dumb question: Why not connect pipe to the well and relieve the pressure by allowing the oil rise to the surface and into waiting ships?”

I was thinking the same ‘dumb’ thing. It seems to me that if they carefully extracted the oil (with extreme caution due to concerns over expanding methane), over time the pressure would go down, and whatever leakage is finding it’s way through the seep(s) would diminish as pressure is relieved. In my capitalist mind, the extracted oil could then be used to fund the coastal cleanup and related damages.

Why not connect pipe to the well and relieve the pressure by allowing the oil rise to the surface and into waiting ships?”

It isn't a dumb question, but there is a simple answer.

BY LAW, when an OIL WELL has a BLOWOUT, it has to be capped and cannot be used for OIL PRODUCTION.

This does not mean they can't drill ANOTHER well, into the same reservoir.

BUT, they definitely are not allowed to use BUSTED UP EQUIPMENT in production.

This well is DAMAGED. The CASING below the sea floor ruptured (two months before the FIRE).

The BOP assembly is TILTED, and there were structural failures up and down the five stories tall framework and piping. The seafloor around the BASE of the BOP has been compromised.

Just because they were able to add ANOTHER BOP to the top of the OLD ONE, and get the flow temporarily stopped doesn't mean the WELLHEAD/BOP ASSEMBLY is safe. It means the opposite.

More weight has been added to the top of the whole thing, making it even more unstable. They have added anchor cables, but you can only do so much (especially when your anchors are tied to same unstable seafloor).
