WASHINGTON (Reuters) The world is enduring the hottest year on record, according to a U.S. national weather analysis, causing droughts worldwide and a concern for U.S. farmers counting on another bumper year.
For the first six months of the year, 2010 has been warmer than the first half of 1998, the previous record holder, by 0.03 degree Fahrenheit, said Jay Lawrimore, chief of climate analysis at the federal National Climatic Data Center.
Period of a El Nino weather pattern is being blamed for the hot temperatures globally.
"We had an El Nino episode in the early part of the year that's now faded but that has contributed to the warmth not only in equatorial Pacific but also contributed to anomalously warm global temperatures as well," Lawrimore said.
Abnormally warm temperatures have been registered in large parts of Canada, Africa, tropical oceans and parts of the Middle East.
Northern Thailand is struggling through the worst drought in 20 years, while Israel is in the middle of the longest and most severe drought since 1920s. In Britain, this year has been the driest since 1929.
Also, Arctic sea ice has melted to its thinnest state in June.
However, as cooler temperatures may set in later this year, it remains to be seen whether 2010 will overtake 2005 as the hottest year overall.
What may tip the scale is the development of La Nina, possibly coming in July and August, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration .

That’s just pure Horse Sh**! We had a record breaking winter with record breaking low temps, so now we have the warmest on record? What a bunch of global warming crap!
If AL couldn't predict Molly Hegerty, how could he predict possibly predict the future of mankind?
What drug are these people on? Nicest summer for 20 years. Do they really think people will buy this “U.S. Farmers worried” crap?
Rained in Simi Valley today.
So we had an El Nino in 1998.
12 years and quite a bit of carbon dioxide later, we are having another El Nino. We are having global temperatures statistically the same as 1998.
That would be a data point in favor of those who reason that global warming will be an annoyance rather a full-scale disaster.
To liberals it is Armageddon.
To everyone else it is July.
The tomatoes love it. They are going like gangbusters.
Bingo! we have a winner
To base any predictions of a climate trend on temperature observations over a mere 200 years is laughable. The fact a few con artists at the UN are getting away with it only illustrates once again how easily human ignorance can be manipulated for political ends.
In other news summer is hot.
Having an unseasonably cool summer here in Montana. 1 day it reached 90 but been 60’s to low 80’s. Not complaining I like 60 to low 80 just fine. Of course we start wearing shorts once temp. reaches 55, even use car air conditioning then:) Nights have been cooler then usual also, makes for good sleeping. Still have 2 blankets on my bed, down from winter 4 normally down to 1 by now. Perhaps it’s “global cooling” the religion from the 70’s.
I was wondering the same thing. What’s the margin of error?
Phoenix hasn’t hit 123 this year. Even had 89 degree weather a month ago. How is this the hottest?
yawnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn...................
Three hundredths of a degree.
Those are some thermometers !
They conveniently omit the fact that they don't use records of reasonalbe length. Just today I read about a heatwave in Russia. More honestly than our press --- I can't believe we have come to this --- the article says that the last time summer was this hot was 130 years ago.
So much for scientific honesty in the West.
Women can smell guys like me and usually come around for a sniff. Not today. Too many guys walking out of stores with boxes of cold beer going home. Women were the third option after a cold shower.
I saw the map and it showed a weak red in the pacific northwest. Now considering we had the coldest May since 1929 and a very very cool June I doubt seriously it’s conclusions.
Let me be the first to say, understanding the Mods reaction as well...
Bull Shit. It hasn’t been all that hot at all.
