The man shot by police outside a Summerlin Costco store on Saturday was a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point with a master's degree from Duke University, friends said.

Army veteran Erik Scott, 39, was at the store near Charleston Boulevard and the Las Vegas Beltway with his girlfriend before three officers fatally shot him in a confrontation.

You should read up on Bucky Phillips. He had both the New York and Pennsylvania state police tied up in knots for most of a week.

He only had to kill a couple of them too.

I have been a member of Costco almost since their inception. Their response to this will determine whether I EVER shop there again.

Watching and waiting...

They are an extremely liberal company nonetheless.

Some here are saying “mistakes happen” and their weapon may be seen once in a while but it has never happened to me. If I did slip up in a public place and someone saw it I’d leave immediately.

It's "Officer Safety Uber Alles" with some of these types.

And yes, that "Alles" includes everyone - even distinguished war veterans who faced down more danger every single day they donned their uniform than a cop will ever encounter in his entire lifetime.

That’s a genuine opinion you got there mister. Having read the subthread, however, you are the one that seems to have the thinnest grasp on how the real world works regarding this single issue.

I also have a friend that has his suits custom tailored to go around his concealed pistol. If he makes a reach for something it can be possible to see a glimpse of the weapon. He doesn’t keep it in his g-string.

This story is incredibly sad. I can't imagine how horrible this must be for his loved ones. Unbelievable.

I actually saw one of these security people at Walmart stop a guy trying to steal a TV because they asked to see his receipt. It was the only thing he had in his cart and he swore he just paid for it in the TV dept. :o)

I could easily see one of the cops screaming something along the lines of "drop your weapon, motherf__r!" or a similar string of expletives knowing how they typically conduct themselves.

All three were probably trigger happy and ready to go so when he followed the instructions of the first one to drop his weapon, the other who was screaming "get your f___ing hands where I can see them!" opened fire. Hearing that initial shot, it is likely the other two quickly joined in.

I saw an off-duty police officer’s concealed carry gun yesterday at a Boy Scout gathering. He’s good at concealing, but he was lifting something up into a truck, which exposed the barrel end of his concealed carry holster. Happens all the time, even to the pros.

Like I said, I never conceal-carried. Always put the gun on my front seat on the way to target shooting (back when I used to live in Las Vegas, by the way). But it seems like you have the right idea on the subject. If a mistake happens, leave the premises. Which is what that lying scumbag employee (if witness stories turn out to be true) was basically demanding. Too bad (for his sake) the victim didn’t comply with that demand.

If the witness-version of the story holds up, I hope all the perpetrators pay with as much freedom and cash as the justice system will permit for their respective roles in this crime.

Humor, like art, is subjective.

I see both sides of this one. I don’t think it was all that appropriate, but that’s just me.

Sam’s/WalMart is less liberal. Why do you think they are always under attack from the left?

That’s kind of what I suspected and, actually, why I asked.

There is way more to this story than what is being reported.

What kind of confrontation occurred between the victim and the store clerk ?

Did the store clerk call the police ?

Did the store manager call the police?

What was the store's SOP for calling the police ?

The police training is highly suspect.

You do not approach someone from
behind and tap him on the shoulder
and not expect a sudden reaction.

All that being said CCW training includes
how to react in a confrontation with police.

This is how I train NRA Personal Protection Instructors.

They are under different rules.

'It is not concealed carry it is backup.

Uri tells Talon: You are fool and give a bad name to law abiding citizens and provide fuel for the Statists to ban all handguns.

Seems to me the fool is the one who subscribes to "zero tolerance" in a standard impossible to meet -- there is always a danger, even in the most scrupulous carrier, that a concealed weapon will be revealed or suspected. By advocating zero tolerance of any concealed carry accidentally revealed, you provide fuel for the Statists to ban all handguns because you can bet your ass those Statists understand the impossiblity of meeting your standard, and put you on their side.
