The British ex-husband of alleged spy Anna Chapman has disclosed a series of emails she sent him weeks before her arrest, describing her regrets over the life she had chosen.
Mrs Chapman, 28, told Alex Chapman she had suffered a lot because of her decision to put her career ahead of a chance to start a family with him. But she said she was determined to make her new life in America work, adding: Its never too late to be happy and succeed.
Mrs Chapman, who was arrested in the US last weekend as part of an 11-strong suspected spying ring, was married to public school-educated Mr Chapman for four years before they divorced in 2006. But the couple remained close friends and were in regular phone and email contact.
Mr Chapman told The Daily Telegraph he and his then wife had discussed having a baby and he believes they would have started a family together if she hadnt become obsessed with a new career after secretive meetings with Russians.
He said: She had to choose between her career and having a baby, and she chose her career. It was a really, really hard thing for both of us, but especially Anna.

Was she here illegally or not?
C’mon Obama, hit the reset button, issue her a pardon and I will do my darn best to give her what she wants. :-)
She signed on to do harm to America. Let her rot in Russia.
However, I suspect she’ll be back on our shores sooner rather than later.
The work of harming the USA is never finished.
Well,I got a great pick up line for Russian women. Hi,I’m
going to be President someday!
I'm sure once Holder gets a chance to personally look into her case, she will be welcomed back with a huge restitution check.
I wonder why they threw that in there?
Now that you mention it I dont know if she was charged with that or not.
Public school in the UK is private school here. Not sure why it would be an important issue.
. . .because it is a British newspaper, and that means the opposite of what we think, and actually means he was private-school educated.
That guy was probably used to obtain an English-sounding name to help cover her espionage activities. She probably never had any intention of starting a family....

In the UK "public school" means private boarding school of the highest rank, like Exeter.
> Public school in the UK is private school here.
Correct.
> Not sure why it would be an important issue.
Implies a rich family, perhaps nobility.
And I never lied to my mother either.
Okay, didn’t realize that, thanks.
In 1996 I was writing letters to women in Russia and I jumped on a plane and went over to meet one. She was from Ryazan Russia but we met it Moscow. She was supposedly a school teacher 26 and stunning.
Long story short it did not work for us, but you should have seen the women who approached me in the hotel bar after that!
I find this an amusing twist on the “spy who loved me” thing. It’s amusing because she’s in the same boat that most women approaching middle age that chose career over family find themselves in. The culture tells them career is what is important. But women are not put together that way . . .
Anybody notice how the media is turning this despicable spy into a sympathetic figure?!
Her power to warp men’s minds is immense and is on full display, even here on FR.
I wonder why they threw that in there?

Public schools in Britain refers to the fact that they are open to the public rather than being private tutoring. They are what Americans would call private schools because our public schools mean government run schools.
Well she was a practiced deceiver. And she probably still can.
