As the verdict reached the streets, hundreds converged in downtown Oakland for mostly peaceful protests before swelling to a crowd of more than a thousand, with a hard-core splinter group of rioters clashing with police and wreaking havoc in downtown.
By late evening, hundreds of law enforcement officers from across the Bay Area had descended downtown to help local police quell the protesters. Wearing black masks, many looted stores, smashed windows and rolled trash bins into the streets while setting them on fire. At one point, protesters began throwing M-1000 fireworks at law enforcement officers and other demonstrators.
Stephen Allen, a 22-year-old protester from West Oakland, got caught near a mob that broke through the gate of the Foot Locker shoe store and looted the store of sneakers and sportswear. Moments later, a masked man, in one swift and violent blow of a long object, broke the window of the Far East National Bank across the street.

Some of these rioters, judging by the fact that they were wearing black ski masks and attacking banks, were probably white anarchists taking advantage of the situation. According to some reports, the police stood back and let the rioters romp around because they didn’t want to “provoke” them...
Aside from that, though, where was it announced that Barry asked the DOJ to “look into” the verdict? I haven’t read that anywhere yet. Pretty stunning if so, but that’s his approach. If you don’t get the outcome you want the first time around (and obviously, the outcome he wants is a conviction for first degree murder) try, try again through some admininstrative means.
This was a determined riot. It was a planned outing.
Nothing spontaneous about it.

Unfortunately, the precedent for this comes from a ‘nominally’ Republican President - GHWB’s response to the Rodney King riots was to re-try the officers under federal Civil Rights Statutes, after the local courts didn’t give the ‘desired’ result.....

No offense but it goes back even further.
The first case I can personally recall was between 1970 and 1973, when Nixon would have been POTUS (I had my 1970 Ford Torino).
It happened down South. Some white got off on murder charges of a black and the Feds stepped in. They charged, arrested, and retired him for 'civil rights violations'. I was screaming in my car, DOUBLE JEOPARDY! DOUBLE JEOPARDY!
But the Feds got their conviction, to 'set things right'. And the die was cast(1)
(1) It may go even further back to the 60's and Klan arrests by the Feds. But those I can't personally recall, not living in the south. The other one I heard of went 'national'.

The parallel I was drawing with my example had more to do with craven surrender to rioting mobs - which GHWB made no attempt to disguise when he personally came on TV and announced the do-over for the Rodney King Trials.....
Where I live, a doctor’s office front door hung open from friday close till sunday afternoon. Someone finally called the police to get the coor closed. There are still sane places in America.
