Rangel wants draft back to punish rich kids
New York Post ^ | July 8, 2010

Rep. Charles Rangel yesterday again called for bringing back the national draft -- right at the Times Square recruiting station. For the third time since the Iraq War began, the Harlem Democrat announced his plans to introduce a bill requiring all Americans to serve in the armed forces. "If you love your country, be prepared to serve," said Rangel, a Korean War veteran. Congress should stop funding the war and, instead, use tax dollars to bring troops home, he said. Rangel, who this year was stripped of his chairmanship of the House Ways and Means Committee, said the bill calls for men and women 18-42 to sign up for the draft during wartime. It will likely be introduced next week.

The military does not want a draft, only social engineers want a draft. We don’t fight from trenches or make on-line charges against fortified positions anymore, we don’t need zombies with a gun. We need intelligent, motivated patriots, not whinny nosed punks who don’t want to be there.

You have his motivations right.

The draft is a triple header win for the left.

1) It forces people to work under their authority without them choosing to do so.
2) It reduces the effectiveness of the military.
3) It makes the USE of that military in America’s national interest more difficult due to popular resistance.

He wants to cripple the U.S. military by filling it with unwilling conscripts.

My next door neighbor hit the beaches at the end of D day, the next time I see him I'll tell him what you think of him. And my brother died on the Marina islands. And if you want to bad mouth him do it to my face.

Specifically a gestapo.

Lefties cannot understand or stand the concept of individual freedom.

Their preferred method is “involuntary servitude” (which I thought emancipation ended). Lefties can only rule by “compulsion and supression”.

They want us as slaves out on the plantation.

Only problem is, most of the nation will not go along. And there are too many armed citizens to even consider trying that stuff.

Rangel, like most other Democrats, thinks we’re still fighting like we were in the Vietnam War. The military has changed, and the young men and women who enter it, are doing it voluntarily. There are some who do so because they haven’t found a job, and they have the idea that serving will help them find a job, later on, when they get out. The military has always been a way to become upwardly mobile. Many, however, are kids of middle class or even upper middle class families. There are no college deferments that wealthy kids use to duck service, causing the problem of the children of the poor being the ones having to do the service instead, so any calls for a draft are nonsense.

Oh for Pete’s sake! Do you go around looking to pick fights at your age?

WWII was a different world. It was a national emergency and everyone was motivated. Rangel and friends want to bring back Vietnam and it’s associated domestic unrest of which the draft was the main bone of contention. Did you sleep through the sixties or what?

So you think they had a choice and were fulfilling free will?

I definitely prefer a professional, skilled, high-tech army of volunteers than a massive unskilled force of cannon fodder.

"We don’t fight from trenches or make on-line charges against fortified positions anymore, "

The Brits did a couple of fixed bayonet charges in Afghanistan.....also some close quarter work with hand held bayonets when the ammo ran out/barrels melted....was on FReerepublic some months ago.

I am currently serving in the Army - and have been since before 9/11. I do believe we should have a mandatory service draft of 2 years. After completion of those two years, if you want to stay, or go to college you should be allowed to do so. I don’t think this is such a bad idea, most countries in the world that I have worked with require some sort of military or civilian service. Even liberal states such as Sweden require either military or civil service. I also think that if we make it mandatory for all these kids to serve, it will be an incentive for the top brass to re-think their political ROE agenda games, because it will also put their kids at risk.

“2) It reduces the effectiveness of the military.”

I was in the Air Force during the View Nam era, and even though the Air Force never drafted people, half the people that joined only did so to avoid being drafted. As you can imagine, their attitude was sh()t. If any part of your job depended on somebody else doing theirs, most of the time you were up the creek without a paddle.

Rangel or any one else that thinks the draft was better is a freaking idiot. I was there - it wasn't.

Don’t we already have that forced volunteerism bill that was signed last year? What’s happening with that?

It might just end up filling the military with a bunch of people beyond pi$$ed at the Democrats. A lot of people become conservative after joining and I daresay that it might end up creating more republicans. Furthermore, it might end up with a very, very unmanageable military on their hands.

They would end up resenting their Democrat overlords. Then, their wealthy families would also turn against the Democrats working night and day to get them out and keep them out of office.

Not to stick my nose in here, but there is an important difference: The people of your next door neighbor’s and brother’s generation were made of FAR sterner stuff than the current potential crop of draftees. A drafted army from today’s young people would certainly include some similarly strong people, but it would also include a vast number of spoiled entitlement-minded soft-brained children in barely adult bodies. It would be a nightmare for military preparedness and effectiveness. Just MHO, of course.

....I agree with some of your comments, but Rangel the Rat uses the military draft as a political red flag whenever it suits him.
