Why Immigration Enforcement and Secure Borders Are What Will Keep America Safe From Terrorists

When naturalized U.S. citizen Faisal Shahzad was arrested for his terror plot to detonate a bomb in Times Square, it exposed more than the ongoing attempts by international terror organizations to attack America...The arrest was another in a long line of examples that demonstrate the need to secure our nation’s borders and enforce our nation’s immigration laws to keep terrorists from entering the US.

For years, we’ve known that strong border security is a fundamental component of national security.

The Times Square bomber was able to gain U.S. citizenship because a background check failed to identify him as a threat.

.. Omar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the Christmas Day bomber, had previously been given a visa to enter the U.S. But even after his own father called to alert authorities that Abdulmutallab might have been radicalized, his visa was not revoked and he was allowed to board a plane to the US.

.... our immigration system failed to keep these terrorists either from entering the U.S. or becoming citizens.

The 9/11 hijackers also received visas to come to this country. ... all but one of the 9/11 hijackers acquired some form of a U.S. identification document. These forms of ID ultimately helped them board commercial flights..

...Congress appointed the 9/11 Commission to examine intelligence failures that led to September 11. The 9/11 Commission recognized these immigration-related weaknesses as part of the problem.

Terrorists may also be exploiting weaknesses in the Southwest border to enter the U.S. In 2007, then Director of National Intelligence Admiral McConnell confirmed that the U.S./Mexico border is a gateway to the U.S. for terrorists.

It makes no sense to deny the link between immigration enforcement and national security. That means enforcing our immigration laws, not ignoring them!

A Hizbullah terror cell may be operating among drugs cartels around the US-Mexican border, announced US Republican National Committee Representative Sue Myrick, according to a Fox News report.

Myrick requested US Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano create a special team to further investigate the potential problem and threat.

The Republican representative referenced several incidents that show evidence of Hizbullah's efforts to infiltrate the US region with the aid of Mexican drug cartel gangs.

"It is vital we know what is happening on our border, especially as crime and violence continue to rise there and as terrorist plots and threats are increasing inside the US," quoted the Fox News report.

Myrick cited the warming relationship between Iran and Venzuela as proof that Hizbullah members may be collaborating with Latin American drug cartels, who may be utilizing Hizbullah's ability to dig underground tunnels for drug smuggling and in turn, providing funding, document forging and false identities.

The Fox News report referenced Anthony Placido, assistant administrator for intelligence at the Drug Enforcement Administration, testifying at a House Oversight and Government Reform subcommittee in March this year, that some drug smugglers in the US-Mexico region have had relationships with Hizbullah between the 1980s and 1990s

Fox News also cited a 2006 House Homeland Security Committee report which details incidents of Hizbullah operatives who were apprehended when trying to access the US through Mexico. The report mentions Mahmoud Youssef Kourani, a Hizbullah member who pleaded guilty in 2005 for supplying information to the terror organization after he was smuggled in the US through Mexico, and lived in Dearborne, Michigan.[snip]

COLORADO SPRINGS | The new commander of the U.S. military’s homeland security forces is stepping up cooperation with Mexico in an effort to stem drug trafficking and related violence.

Navy Adm. James A. Winnefeld Jr., in his first newspaper interview since taking over in May as commander of U.S. Northern Command, said he is worried about the potentially devastating effects of a cyber-attack and that he remains concerned about the growing terrorist threat of what he termed “shot-on-goal” attacks, like the recent attempted car bombing in New York’s Times Square.

On Mexican drug violence, Adm. Winnefeld said he has increased the priority for dealing with drug cartels, which continue to operate in the United States. “I’m ramping up the priority on our very close partnership with Mexico, a very interesting nation with some very courageous political leadership right now,” he said.

Adm. Winnefeld said the “struggle” over Mexican drug trafficking and violence is taking place in several different areas, or “theaters,” including inside the United States, in Mexico, along the U.S. border with Mexico and near Mexico’s southern borders, as well as in the seas near the U.S. and Mexican coasts.
