The nation's indoor tanning industry was unfairly targeted when Congress imposed a 10 percent tax on its services as a way to help pay for the federal health-care reform bill, several Tulsa-area tanning salon owners say.
The tax went into effect Thursday and is expected to raise $2.7 billion toward a $940 billion health-care overhaul.
At first, the tax was aimed at the cosmetic surgery industry. But it was transformed at the last minute into what is known as the "tanning tax" in an effort to prevent skin cancer.
Tabetha Folds, who owns Second Sun Tanning Salon, 4715 E. 11th St., said the last-minute decision to tax tanning salons was "a random choice" because her industry wouldn't put up as big a fight as other groups. She pointed out that fast-food restaurants pose a more immediate risk to health.

Considering they mostly voted for Obama, it serves them right.
THAT is a highly-variable quantity. :-)
They they should play that nonstop on a monitor while their customers are getting their tan. Force the liberal idiots that voted for RATS to know why they were singled out to pay more taxes to pay healthcare for illegals and welfare leeches.
The Obama supporters do not use liberty in great quantity, therefore ALL liberties need to be taxed.
The question is, will there be enough against this who will fight?
Discrimination against WHITE people, don’t see too many African Americans at the TANNING SALONS!
What does it matter? Does the fact that something is bad for you give the government the right to tax or outlaw it?
The only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others. His own good, either physical or moral, is not sufficient warrant.

Here in Alaska where there is no or very little sunlight for a good part of the the year, the health benefits of increased vitamin "D" production and the reduction of seasonal affective disorder far outweigh the cancer risk.
Good point.
I have mild psoriasis and the only thing that keeps it from getting worse in the fall/winter months here in PA is limited exposure to UV light in tanning beds. The year-round exposure is very beneficial. Obviously, there are health risks with UV light, however, the benefits of living normally without wanting to scratch the skin from my body far outweigh the consequences.
So count this “idiot” among those who frequent tanning salons and are paying an additional tax for health and happiness purposes.
Apparently it’s falling on deaf ears, even here on FR. First they came for the smokers, but I didn’t smoke. Then they came for the drinkers, but I didn’t drink...
Soon they will come for your cheeseburgers, your internet and you car.
I usually believe that a “great quantity” of alcohol consumption is always more than whatever I’m consuming. And I bet most Americans would agree with that position ,as regards their own consumption!
They are already planning the 'unhappy meal' for kids. . .
How about a tax on hair straightening, gold teeth, hiphop music, and gangsta attire ?
