"He said in his autobiography that he had joined the Klan because he shared its anti-Communist creed..."--New York Times
If he were REALLY anti-Communist, how in hell could he have justified his membership in the democrat party and his support of the Marxist Obama administration.

His claven was a sort of hipster, daddy-O, beatnik one that just hated Jews, Catholics, Republicans, Wops, Daggoes, Greeks, ‘Ricans.......and of course...all on ideological grounds, not personally. Why some of his best friends were..

poor guy- in the end, no one must have been watching after him Doesn't bother me. At least he didn't die hanging from a tree like so many victims of the Klan.

"Reconstruction in the South was pretty harsh, worse, for example, that what was done in defeated nations after WW2. It isn't surprising that something like the KKK would arise in response."
I don't agree with what you said concerning justifying the clan. However, lets say you are correct. West Virginia used to be a part of Virginia. It got it's existence because it broke off from Virginia during the Civil War. It was a non slave state and part of the Union. They didn't have any reconstruction in West Virginia after the Civil War. So even if we take your point at face value, why would the clan thrive in West Virginia? It looks like it thrived because of young industrious racists like Robert Byrd keeping it alive.

In other words, he is now eligible to vote in Chicago. Not true! He has always been eligible to vote for any and all democrats!
Remember when in Chicago or Cook County:
Vote early and often!

You obviously never had any relatives who remembered reconstruction first hand.

I'm from southwestern PA, not the south. However, that is irrelevant in regards to West Virginia. They weren't part of reconstruction!!! They were part of the union!!! They were admitted to the union and told that they would have to give up slavery on condition of admittance. They voted for that. Why? Because few if anyone in West Virginia had slaves. There was no reconstruction after the Civil War. They were on the winning side. So explain how the consequences of reconstruction made young Robert C. Byrd go into the Clan since he lived in West Virginia from the time he was one year old?

I read an article last night about his seat. The article stated that if he had to leave the Senate seat before July 3, an election would have to take place this November to fill it.

Klansman Robert Byrd, the senior senator from West Virginia, casually used the phrase "white nigger" twice on national TV this weekend. Enraged civil rights groups organized a protest campaign against Sen. Byrd and demanded that he undergo sensitivity training...He is now undergoing sensitivity training.

"Not the point, I was explaining the origin of the klan."
And it was in an article concerning the passing of Robert C. Byrd. The excuse you gave for people joining the Clan could not possibly apply to Byrd so why bring it up? Are we here to justify Byrd's clan membership? He never even used that excuse that I've read (reconstruction). His excuse was that he thought they were a good organization as a bulwark against communism. That's the most hilarious excuse of all because he goes on to join the Communist, er I mean Democratic party.

Born Nov. 20, 1917, in North Wilkesboro, N.C., Byrd was orphaned as a 1-year-old when his mother died.He was 10 days older than my mother is. I wonder if his mother was a victim of a real flu pandemic?
