Day 68: Why isn’t the A-Whale in the Gulf yet?
Hot Air ^ | 6/27/2010 | Ed Morrissey

Posted on 06/27/2010 11:58:29 AM PDT by kara2008

The A-Whale bills itself as the largest open-water oil skimmer in the world, and it’s at least very impressive. Originally an oil and ore tanker, the ship’s owners recently refitted the ship to do exactly the kind of work that the US so desperately needs in the Gulf of Mexico, and to do it on a vastly larger scale than current operations can handle. According to the ship’s project manager, the entire American effort in 66 days has skimmed off 600,000 barrels of oil. The ship’s owners claim that A-Whale can skim 500,000 barrels a day.

So where is the A-Whale now? In the Gulf? Not yet. It’s on its way there after being tied to a dock in Norfolk, Virginia, and won’t be allowed to join the cleanup effort until the Coast Guard and the EPA figure out whether it meets their standards...

The a-whale skimmer is sitting idle in Norfolk, VA in a sea of EPA regulatory hurdles and government red tape.

Because the usurper is out playing golf? Because the A-Whale wasn’t part of the plan to destroy America? Because Soros is in negotiations to sink it?

Lawrence Solomon: Avertible catastrophe
Financial Post ^ | 6/25/2010 | Lawrence Solomon

How U.S. labour and environmental rules blocked Dutch spill-cleanup technology

Some are attuned to the possibility of looming catastrophe and know how to head it off. Others are unprepared for risk and even unable to get their priorities straight when risk turns to reality.

The Dutch fall into the first group. Three days after the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico began on April 20, the Netherlands offered the U.S. government ships equipped to handle a major spill, one much larger than the BP spill that then appeared to be underway. “Our system can handle 400 cubic metres per hour,” Weird Koops, the chairman of Spill Response Group Holland, told Radio Netherlands Worldwide, giving each Dutch ship more cleanup capacity than all the ships that the U.S. was then employing in the Gulf to combat the spill.

Before this is all over we are going to have to start rounding up beauracrats and flogging them! They are so damned afraid that something they haven't put a mark on is going to actually work they just can't stand it! They figure if we see things working in spite of them we might figure out that they are a waste of air and money!

I've been all over the place on boats the government never inspected, they would no doubt have condemned them. We always got there and back just fine.

There is no critter on Earth as disgusting as a sorry little weenie type who has taken some government courses and been handed a badge.

Hell, Columbus would still be sitting in a European harbor if he'd been subject to government interference!

Why isn’t the A-Whale in the Gulf yet?

Because of the lazy A-Hole in the White House?

Why is'nt the A-Whale in the Gulf yet?

Because Obama has the USCG counting their life jackets.

They should be done by spring...

If the oil industry shows it can handle a spill of this magnitude, there will be no reason to stop offshore drilling anywhere.

The left can't allow that. We would be energy independent for many years. That would thwart their best efforts to force us into inefficient, over-priced alternatives.

Funny; how the alternatives are all owned and backed by leftists.

I wonder indeed what Obama does when his agendas get blocked or when he finds out something he wants done quietly instead is spread all across the internet.

It was said Hitler would “gnash the rug” in other words he would drop to the floor in a rage and tryi to claw lumps out of it.

There is something that he either beats, kicks or degenerates when his way is blocked. I doubt its Michelle, he must have an associate he takes out his frustrations on, its certainly not golf, that is just an excuse to run away from a crisis.

“Can you just imagine this a$$hole as POTUS in December 1941? Nothing at all would have gotten done.”

I disagree: here’s my view of what the NY Slimes headline would have been on December 8, 1941

If the oil industry shows it can handle a spill of this magnitude,

Yet, this is one of the smaller spills on record. It is only the 'largest' in the context of the GOM.

The ship was originally built as a supertanker for oil. But soon afterward, the BP oil spill began off the Louisiana coast, and Su saw an opportunity.

He sailed the ship to Portugal for modifications, turning A Whale into an oil skimmer that “drinks seawater,” Su said.

Su has spent “many millions” on the project, said Frank Maisano, a spokesman, and would “pretty much like to recover his costs.”

The shipping magnate has not talked to BP yet and is not sure who would pay his expenses, assuming A Whale is approved for the work.
