WASHINGTON Initial claims for jobless benefits fell by the largest amount in two months last week, but remain above levels consistent with healthy job growth.
Despite the drop of 19,000, claims are at about the same level they were at the beginning of the year. The stubbornly high level of requests for jobless aid is a sign hiring remains weak even as the economy recovers.
The Labor Department said Thursday that new claims dropped to a seasonally adjusted 457,000. That's slightly below economists' forecasts of 460,000, according to Thomson Reuters.
First-time requests for unemployment insurance have been stuck at about 450,000 since the beginning of this year. New claims dropped steadily last year after reaching a peak of 651,000 in March 2009. Claims need to fall closer to 425,000 to signal sustained job growth, many economists say.
The four-week average dipped by 1,500 to 462,750, the first drop in six weeks.

As the economy adapts. There’s no damn recovery.
Word.
BINGO! This is a BLATANT and QUANTIFIABLE change that they've pulled, and the RNC and others should hammer it with very simple ad presentation. A nice bite-sized nugget..nothing elaborate...like they should be doing on many topics.
Annual Unemployment Rates, from the Bureau of Labor Statistics:
2000: 4.0
George W. Bush takes office
2001: 4.7
2002: 5.8
2003: 6.0
2004: 5.5
2005: 5.1
2006: 4.6
2007: 4.6
2008 5.8
There were a few months where it dipped below 4.5% (Graph with monthly rates), but overall, it was generally above 4.5%. That doesn't mean it was as bad as the current situation--not nearly so--or that it wasn't below 5% for a stretch. But that's part of my point. There's no reason for conservatives to exaggerate--we have facts on our side, so let's stick to facts and let the Left make things up, and again get known as unreliable and dishonest.
Wouldn’t those who run out of benefits then be part of the fall in claims? After x weeks on unemployment, the claim expires and a new one must be filed. If insufficient hours worked during the first claim, a person is not eligible to file a second claim. I get the impression the job situation is worsening so I have doubts about this ‘surprise drop’.
