Voters in South Carolina nominated a black Republican lawmaker for an open congressional seat Tuesday, rejecting a legendary political name and potentially changing the face of the national party.
State Rep. Tim Scott defeated Paul Thurmond, an attorney who is son of the one-time segregationist U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond. Scott, who won the runoff with 69 percent of the vote, is now poised to become the nation's first black GOP congressman since 2003.
Scott, 44, owns an insurance business and became the first black Republican in the South Carolina Legislature in more than a century when elected two years ago. Before that, he served 13 years on Charleston County Council and was elected chairman four times.
He's now the favorite in the coastal 1st District, which has elected a Republican congressman for three decades. He would become the first black Republican congressman since Oklahoma's J.C. Watts retired in 2003.

I don't like identity politics as much as the next guy, but this is really tremendous news; Historic, in so many ways. I suspect he'll coast to election in the fall.
It’s the Palin effect. :) Wow and I’m still reeling in from the Haley win...this is such a remarkable time in GOP history.
Looks like another good night for conservative principles and for a chance of saving our country this November.
WOO HOO!!! Congratulations, Mr Scott!!
How many times can you fit “black” into one news story. Heaven help him if he’s involved in a scandal: black republican, black republican, black republican, black republican, black republican, black republican, black republican, black republican, black republican.
I dont think he’ll have any trouble winning.
Great news—this will kick in the door for many more black conservatives for successful entry to the GOP. Just let the leftist try to smear this guy-—this time we go whoop azz on them! The times they are a changin’.....
Can he win the elections in November? What is the make up of the district?
gogogo..
Looks like another good night for conservative principles and for a chance of saving our country this November.
Enough the delusions so to appear politically correct. Blacks vote 95% democrat and it will remain like this forever.
So the conservatives celebrate their black candidate winning (Scott) while the leftist liberals moan about theirs (Greene). So the party of racists is who?
So glad things are going great in the South Carolina primary!
Here in the Sunshine State we have all kins of dirty tricks happening....especially in Florida Congressional district 8 which happens to be Alan Grayson’s district!
But some of the “dirty tricks” are coming from whom we don't expect it so much. From candidates who profess to be constitutional conservatives who honor Christian values.
Take a look here and you will see what I mean!
Congrats, dear Sir, on your election victory! The entire American Tea Party is behind you!
Congratulations to Mr. Scott. I just donated to his campaign.
It’s a Republican district. The Dems only have desultory opposition for him to face.
Thanks, excellent.
I know he was endorsed by Sarah Palin and Club for Growth, pretty good credentials by themselves. But what else do we know about him? What was his record as a state legislator?
