Can he win the elections in November? What is the make up of the district?
It’s a Republican district. The Dems only have desultory opposition for him to face.
Tim Scott is almost guaranteed to win. The district was helped by the creation of a minority majority district that stretches from the black precincts in Charleston through the so-called black belt of the state to the black precincts in Columbia. As a result, the 1st C.D. has only 20 percent black voters and votes strongly Republican. The nominee of the Democratic Party is a perennial candidate who won the nomination of his party on the basis of his pigmentation. The person who was supposed to get the nomination had a strong resume of public service. Unfortunately, for the Democrats, he was too pale to appeal to the base of the S.C. Democratic Party. We in the Republican Party may vote for the best man (or woman), but for many people in the other party, it’s all about skin color.
This is the district Mark Sanford represented when he was in Congress. Last three reps in Congress (spanning 3 decades) have been R. Scott should have little trouble winning.
