A senior Capitol Hill source tells me that General Stanley McChrystal had tendered his resignation to President Barack Obama and that the White House is actively discussing a replacement who could be quickly confirmed by the Senate.
The source said that among the names being touted as possible successors are General James Mattis, the outgoing head of the US Joint Forces Command and due to retire after being passed over as US Marine Corps commander, and Lieutenant General William Caldwell, commander of Natos Training Mission in Afghanistan.

Mattis is awesome!
McChrystal needed to resign. The pity is that anyone who follows is likely to be worse, not better...and the biggest problem we face in Afghanistan is Obama in the White House!
hunh wow. if only they dealt with terrorists this efficiently.
So we’re going to let a stupid article by a stupid “journalist” in the Rolling Stone determine our policy in Afghanistan? Brilliant! And we wonder why we’re ineffective?
I don’t know him. I read a LOT of good things about McChrystal when he was appointed, but I think he started off mediocre and went downhill fast.
Is he?
McChrystal was not the best of the best. Most likely his successor would be an improvement.
Nah, Obama has never been hit so directly with dissent. He can’t handle it. But he’s gonna have to get used to it because other countries also get a say, or they too could withdraw from helping Obama...
“Dear General __________”
I hereby request a transfer to the United States Army Retired Reserve effective at the end of theis month.
Good luck to you, Sir.

“On February 1, 2005, Lieutenant General Mattis, speaking Ad libitum at a forum in San Diego, said “You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around for five years because they didn’t wear a veil. You know, guys like that ain’t got no manhood left anyway. So it’s a hell of a lot of fun to shoot them. Actually, it’s a lot of fun to fight. You know, it’s a hell of a hoot. It’s fun to shoot some people. I’ll be right upfront with you, I like brawling.” Mattis’s remarks sparked controversy and General Michael W. Hagee, Commandant of the Marine Corps, issued a statement suggesting that Mattis should have chosen his words more carefully, but would not be disciplined”
Barry doesn't know he quit?
General James N. Mattis, USMC is the current Commander, U.S. Joint Forces Command (USJFCOM). He previously served as Commander, U.S. Joint Forces Command and as NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Transformation from November 9, 2007 to September 8, 2009. Prior to that, he served as Commanding General, I Marine Expeditionary Force and Commander, U.S. Marine Forces Central Command. I can’t imagine Mattis fighting under the present ROE...he’s a Marine.
And you think obama will pick a better candidate?
Great catch.
Anyone who speaks out against the status quo is OK w/me.
Mattis is an outstanding commander, but if I were him, I’d stick to his original plan of retiring later this year. Otherwise, he’ll fall into the same trap as McChyrstal with this schizophrenic Administration dictating strategy.
