WASHINGTON (AP) One Republican senator lost his job because he voted for the 2008 bank bailout. Two other GOP lawmakers may be next.
Former President George W. Bush's lifeline to financial institutions is roiling GOP primaries, with Republicans who reluctantly supported it facing the ire of conservatives furious about budget-busting spending and tea partiers grousing that Wall Street came before Main Street.
Economists credit the bailout with staving off deeper economic turmoil. Banks have paid back much of the money plus interest. And GOP lawmakers were being loyal Republicans in following the wishes of their president.
Yet some GOP primary voters seem to be ignoring all that in what's shaping up to be an anti-establishment election year. Republican and Democratic pollsters alike say that when it comes to the bailout vote, people seem to see Washington and Wall Street in the same light conspiring against taxpayers.

Arizona Sen. John McCain is facing similar criticism.
He is taking heat for his vote from his GOP primary rival, former Rep. J.D. Hayworth, who points out McCain's support for the measure at every turn. Says Hayworth: "Despite trying to propagate a perception of fiscal responsibility, our friend Mr. McCain is in no position to lecture any of us."
McCain rails against the bailout but doesn't highlight his support of it. He recently told an audience in Arizona: "As much as I respect former President Bush, America was told that if we passed this TARP, they would go to the housing market and stabilize the housing market. Instead, what did they do three days after it was passed? They went and bailed out their financial buddies on Wall Street, who are now doing fine."

Seems the McCain/Palin team was not ‘reluctantly supporting’ it. They were it’s biggest cheerleaders aside from Pelosi, Reid, and Paulson.
Thank you for posting this good news. Some days I’m optimistic about seeing the last of McCain (in elected office, anyway) other days I worry he might squeak it out. Articles like this give me hope.
I am hoping that it( the bailout vote) will take out Gresham Barrett tomorrow.
ARIZONA! Please get rid of McCain!
Wasn’t McCain the clown who stalled his Palin momentum late in the game by suspending his campaign to run back to Washington to assist in creating the bail-out? He’s either criminal or stupid.
McCain needs to go home, rest for his last days and, I say THANK YOU for you military service McCain, but go home.....
And GOP lawmakers were being loyal Republicans in following the wishes of their president.

That’s why they deserve to be thrown out of office.
I’m afraid McPain is to AZ as Byrd is to WV, Schumer is to NY, and Graham is to SC. People in those states just can’t get enough abuse.
Not only is McPain leading in AZ, but so is his friend Crist without the “H” in FL. People just can’t wake up.
NO MORE RINOS!
Have heart! Nikki destroyed Barrett 88-27 in a straw poll yesterday in Aiken County.
Barrett is beyond toast.
I'm having a real hard time deciding between Ard and Connor. Ard beat Connor 59-56 in the straw poll. These guys are always running w/in a couple of points of each other. Hard decision.
PLEASE, ARIZONA!
DUMP MCCAIN!
It is deeply disturbing. How could any thinking person actually vote for John McCain? A man without any principles whatsoever other than his own Ego as politician.
One can fathom political things in Harlem, or Chicago where it is about blatant racism, but in Arizona how could any serious adult actually support John McCain?
It is possible to be both. Criminal and stupid are not mutually exclusive.
Bump!
Because incumbents bring home the bacon. It’s that simple. Everybody wants to keep his place at the trough and cut the other guy out of his.
I wish we could get rid of John Sullivan in OK. Nathan Dahm is a Tea Party style conservative, but it’s hard to defeat an incumbent. *sigh*
