High Rate for Deaths of Pregnant Women in New York State
New York Times ^ | June 18, 2010 | Anemona Hartocollis

More mothers die during pregnancy or soon after in New York than in almost every other state, and according to reports released on Friday by the New York Academy of Medicine and the city’s health department, social factors like poverty, obesity and lack of insurance may be responsible.

While the total number of maternal deaths are small — an average of about 40 a year across the state — city health officials said their analysis showed that maternal mortality was being driven by environmental factors like poor nutrition that could be changed through public policy.

New York City’s analysis, billed as one of the most sophisticated looks at maternal mortality in the country, studied 161 women who died of pregnancy-related causes in the city from 2001 to 2005.

It found that 49 percent of the women who died were obese. Black women, who were more likely to be obese, were seven times as likely to die in pregnancy as white women. Hispanic and Asian women were twice as likely to die as white women.

...

Women without health insurance — who may receive less preventive care — were four times as likely to die as women with such coverage, but women covered by Medicaid, the government insurance program for the poor, fared as well as women with private insurance, the city found.

“Black women are more likely to be obese, and they are more likely to be uninsured, and they are more likely to live in communities where the environment does not promote healthy decisions,” Deborah Kaplan, the assistant commissioner of the city’s bureau of maternal health, said as the city’s data was presented at the Academy of Medicine headquarters in Manhattan.

The health care system cannot cure obesity or drug abuse or force women to have children in their 20s or 30s rather than their 40s.

How could anyone write that with a straight face, I wonder.

It would be easy for a fantasy utopia believer.

No, it’s probably more due to irresponsibility on the part of the mothers. There are numerous pre-natal programs for mothers in need. Of course, some of them probably should never have become pregnant in the first place. If you can’t afford children, don’t have them. Good grief...contraceptives are available everywhere. Or better yet, keep your pants zipped.

That’s true, I suppose. Gosh, if only Public Policy could make *me* thin, I’d save the fees I spend at Weight Watchers.

What lack of insurance? If they’re poverty stricken, they’re on Medicaid.

This only proves how bad Medicaid is, but they want ALL of us except members of Congress and their families to suffer the same fate.

I try not to talk to lefties ... it does not promote healthy decision-making!

This is one of those articles that makes me wonder if I’m still asleep, dreaming that every sentence is so disconnected from reality that it’s hard to believe people like this really exist.

"...an average of about 40 a year across the state..."

These 40 deaths represent a tragedy for the individual and their family. If I had it in my power no one would die during childbirth, but it is beyound my power to prevent it.

But it is also beyound the power of any government to prevent as well.

It is the individual that has the most control over this.

Lefty's tend to herd and they speak and hear in an echo chamber. They never hear common sense or reality. And they tend to avoid anyone who is conservative.

There was one on DU a couple years ago whose Mother was a Republican. She needed her Mother to help her (because of an injury) but hated and resented her. She said she seldom spoke to her. It brought out all kinds of stories of people who avoided Conservatives or Republicans........old friends and family. That thread really showcased the difference between touchy/feely lefties and common sense Conservatives.

Does NY also have the largest ratio of urban residents to country-living residents?
