Is it too late to give Texas back to Mexico?

It’s not that I have anything against Mexico; love the country; love the people. It’s just that I would like to edge the state of Texas over the border and out of America. My issues with the Lone Star State, aside from the fact that it nurtured and launched the career of George Bush, is that the Texas school board has staged an intellectual coup d’état, voting in changes to the school curricula based on political and religious bias rather than educational criteria.

In this case, the board is pushing an ultra-conservative, Christian agenda. But no religious or political agenda would be acceptable.

This is a cautionary tale because what happens in Texas doesn’t necessarily stay in Texas. Textbook publishers are paying close attention. According to published reports, over the last year, they sent curriculum writers to the contentious Texas school board meetings to see which way the political winds were blowing down there.

Publishers are in the business of selling books; if evolution is a nonstarter and creationism is to be embraced, the publishers will tweak their texts accordingly. Of course, those same books will be purchased by other states, which may not concur with Texans’ religious theory. But Texas has 4.8 million schoolchildren, and business is business — or, as Molly Ivins, the great Texas writer, used to say, “Bidness is bidness.”

In the past, the influence of conservatives on the Texas Board of Education has been balanced by the liberal influence of California, the largest purchaser of textbooks. However, because of the economic collapse, California has put off purchasing any new books until 2014. So, Texas rules.

I find it interesting that she wants to replace the weight around the neck of Texas that is the USA with a different yet just as heavy weight, Mexico. She obviously fears having to view, from the United States, the prosperity that would flourish in the Lone Star State if it was peaceably returned to Republic status.

Liberals always think that their political bias is fact.

We might have as good or better odds to take a 3rd world banana republic (Mexico) and try to turn it into America.

That is very insightful! I'm coming over from Georgia when you cede. Count on it!

My company just recently offered me a chance to move to Amarillo. I haven’t made up my mind yet. I am not crazy about the panhandle as it is too flat for my blood. Now maybe if it were somewhere else in Texas......

Don’t get me started. It’s not history anymore. It’s Social Studies(SS). My son is taking a SS state test on Global History and Geography. The practice had many more questions on Imperialism, Colonialism, religion and culture, than any history.

Is it too late to give New York back to the Brits? I don’t really have anything against the Brits (other than the tragically inbred royal family), but it would be nice if we could get rid of the problem that is New York by pawning it off on the Brits.

It would be more useful if Texas would separate into the 5 states it was authorized to split into upon its entry into the county. Just think, 8 more conservative senators in one fell swoop.

So the pushes for Karl Marx, Caesar Chavez, et al in the class curriculum are "objective presentations of history" whereas anything a conservative would push for including is "political and religious bias".

Hey, how about you get your OWN school board and choose your OWN text books for YOUR own state before you start kicking out citizens from this nation.

“How about we get our textbooks from some state that still speaks English???
Maybe Montana or North Dakota or someplace like that?”

We ‘uns in Texas talk normal. Y’all up north talk funny.

Snotty lib cribs a rant against the Texas school book review process and closes with:

And to the people of Mexico, I’m fine with all your émigrés to the U.S. I appreciate all the contributions Mexican-Americans have made to this country. In return I would just like you to take back Texas.

Normally I wouldn't send the Houston PING list out to this, but thought it was particularly nasty bigotry from up north.
