An earthquake has rocked Southern California, shaking the Los Angeles area and forcing a halt to the Toronto Blue Jays-San Diego Padres game in San Diego.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude-5.7 quake was centered five miles southeast of Ocotillo near the U.S.-Mexico border. It struck Monday at about 9:30 PDT.

The quake was initially reported as a magnitude-5.9 temblor.

Over in Fullerton and felt it over here. Not as bad as some of the quakes I felt in Japan. It was one of those shake back and forth ones.

We lived through the ‘94 quake just a handful of miles from the epicenter. Ever after that, when one would happen at night (the ‘94 one was early, still dark on that January morning) I would awaken with my heart racing.

It was at 4:31 AM as I recall. Strongest earthquake I've ever felt and I've been here in L.A. now for 38 years. The bookcase next to my bed was banging hard against the wall and books were flying out of it. The June, 1992 Landers quake was also early in the morning before dawn, at about 5 AM. Scary indeed to be awakened from a sound sleep by a powerful earthquake.

What’s worse, you never know when an earthquake is coming.

That's why I am forever grateful that I got lucky enough to have one come during the one time I was in Las Vegas. (Sadly, at first I thought it was just a couple having fun next door in the Motel 6, but I woke up enough in time to enjoy some of it.)

I doubt I'll get to ever experience a volcano, though. :-(

Darn earthquake adreneline rushes.

They never hit in the morning when trying to get fire up for the day ahead.

You can evade or take shelter from a tornado... You cannot escape a quake. I’ll take my chances with Dorothy and Toto.

What are you talking about? You must be one brave soul. I've seen the aftermath of twisters. Not even a basement is shelter.

Of course, basements are not something we have in California. Something about quakes.

To each his own natural disaster I suppose. May you always be safe and never find yourself in the path of a tornado.

House seems to be doing a bit of creaking still. Can’t feel anything moving but definately hear frequent settling sounds in the walls.

Sometimes at the Motel 6, the volcano erupts, spoiling all chances of an earthquake. :(

Usually you know when a twister/tornado is coming. You NEVER know with an earthquake. I’ll take neither, however.

Lived in CA during 1969..thought I’d experience a quake during that time....Not even one...BUT when I returned to Indiana we had a fairly large one here. Go figure!

An earthquake has rocked Southern California, shaking the Los Angeles area(...)

What wonderful "journalism". Don't these apes understand that "San Diego" != "Los Angeles Area"?

Now, as luck would have it, I'm in Anaheim right now for a conference. I crashed in bed at 9 PM due to having very little sleep the night before, but I had no idea there was an earthquake until logging into FR right now.

What DID wake me up - and must have happened at the same time - was Mickey Mouse's nightly fireworks. I think the mortar launch site is on the roof of the hotel right above my room!

Must of shook something up pretty good, the Brewers win 12-2, that in itself is a freak of nature this year.

That’s how I feel, too. Tornadoes and bad storms? I can live with the risk... An earthquake? No thank you...
