Joran van der Sloot has been charged with murder in the slaying of 21-year-old Stephany Flores.
Peruvian judge Juan Buendia has ordered van der Sloot jailed on murder and robbery charges, and described van der Sloot as having acted with "ferocity and great cruelty."
Police say van der Sloot smashed in the face of Lima business student Stephany Flores, whom he met playing poker at a casino, after taking her to his hotel room on May 30. They say he then strangled her, threw her to the floor and emptied her wallet.
Buendia issued the order before dawn Friday, instructing penal authorities to place the Dutchman in a penitentiary pending trial.

Then tell him if he gives evidence resulting in the recovery of Natalees remains, he can have a pack of smokes.
The Peruvian authorities have basically said, they do not want to know. They said that they specifically limited all their questioning of van der Sloot to just the case dealing with Stephany Flores ...
Peru will hold onto him. He may not face trial in Aruba until after he is sentenced in Peru. It aint like the old USA.
True, Peru will hold onto him until he finishes his time. And it's not Aruba who has any claims on Joran van der Sloot -- but it's the US who does. They have a case in court against van der Sloot right now ... so that's where you'll see him going after his time is served in Peru.
“I think his parents were bigwigs in Aruba.”
His father was, but Daddy’s dead now. Sux to be Joran.
Either that or he will get the first life without parole sentence in Aruba enabling him to have a private jail condo with all amenities avoiding the Peruvian hell.
I don't know why that would happen. Aruba wasn't looking for him or even wanted him when he was in Peru. The US wants him as they've got a court case going, but not Aruba.
The punk aint such a tough guy now. I heard on the news he called his mother crying that he was being mistreated.
LOL ... the Peruvian authorities were mistreating him with kindness... you mean. They gave him all he could eat, steak whenever he wanted it, cigarettes for as much as he wanted to smoke ... and treated him super nice...
He had a Dutch Embassy representative there for all the questioning (and did the translating) and he had his own attorney there for all the questioning.
I think you got the wrong information there ... :-)
Thats good news, was afraid Peru may have a provision allowing extradition for crimes committed previously.
Peru doesn't have an extradition treaty with Aruba. But, the thing is, Aruba doesn't want him. They weren't looking for him before, when he arrived in Peru and they have nothing going on now that they want him either.
However, the US does want him and they do have a court case going.
Let's see if the Peruvians give a crap about the celebrity status Joran is enjoying.
Well, the Peruvian authorities have been treating him nicely, nonetheless ... giving him all the steak he can eat, whenever he wants it, and giving him cigarettes whenever he wants and killing him with kindness...
He doesn't have anything to complain about thus far, in his treatment.
Thanks for the clarifications!
This guy needś to be stopped period. I just hope Peru does not let the world influence them as we see so much of it lately.
Peru only cares about their own case with the Stephany Flores murder. The Peruvian authorities have already said that they explicitly are not asking about anything else, other than this one murder.
They're going to let the rest of the world take care of their own problems. Peru is just dealing with the Stephany Flores murder.
I'm guessing that Peruvian prosecutors will argue that both Aruba and the FBI had the opportunity to arrest him and convict him and they squandered their opportunities - and, as a result, he was walking around free to murder Miss Flores.
The US authorities and the FBI were not dealing with a murder case, but an extortion case. That's what the US authorities want Joran van der Sloot for.
And as far as Aruba, I don't think they want him for anything.
All the others comments aside, that is pretty amazing if he could be out in eight years.
The sentence could be as little as five years, actually, depending on what the court decides to convict him on ...
So..., depending on how the case plays out, it could be just five years, perhaps, and up to 35 years ...
We were discussing a "what if" scenario - if he admits to murdering Natalee and discloses the location of the body in Aruba to prove it as a bid to get back into the Aruban justice system

Well, he already took money from the FBI and has already admitted that he was there when Natalee Holloway died when hitting her head on a rock. In fact, he was supposed to get the remainder of the money (making it $250,000) when they found Holloway's body that he said was there).
So, I don't think he's going to admit that he murdered her, when he had the FBI all over him, took money from them, and said that she fell and hit her head on a rock.
And that's what the FBI's case is about -- for extortion. If they thought they had "murder" then they would have made the charge "murder". They didn't -- they made the charge "extortion".
I think he would admit to anything at this point to get out of Peru, even premeditated murder.

He might..., but that confession would have to be verified with some evidence. Unless he provided the evidence that authorities could find and examine, along with his confession... I don't think he'll be leaving Peru until his time is served.
The US authorities have "been in the business" of dealing with crooks and confessions and evidence for quite a long time now. I'm sure they know how to handle themselves.
Thus far..LOL
Colombian reporters are also pursuing rumors that two women disappeared from casinos there while van der Sloot was visiting.

They won't. Senor Flores is a man of influence in Peru, and Peru doesn't really care about what happened in Aruba some years ago. They care about what happened in Lima recently. They've secured a confession from the creep and aren't going to jeopardize their case by injecting anything from the past into it.
Van der Snoot is going down, into a Peruvian prison, and that's that. Senor Flores may, or may not, arrange to have Van der Snoot killed, or some con may do the job unasked, in order to curry some favor with upper-class Lima society...

After he left Stephany Flores dead in his hotel room in Lima, he went to Bogota, Colombia, where he was seen in the company of two young Colombian women, who haven't been see since...

I wonder if at this point Natalie’s parents are relieved that this piece of garbage is paying for his crime in Peru.
Kind of like the satisfaction of seeing OJ in jail at last.
I am sure the Brown’s and the Goldman’s take some comfort in OJ being jailed.
